The Evolution of UTVs in Rally Racing
From laughingstock to contender

When most people think of Stage Rally racing they are either remembering the old Group B days with insanely powerful Audis and Lancias or they are thinking of the bevy of blue Subarus with giant rear wings of more recent years. What they don’t think of is UTVs.

Just a few years ago UTVs were fighting for inclusion in many of the top desert and off-road racing series in the country. Now, however, they are often outpacing many of the traditional trucks, buggies and bikes they have been thrown up against while becoming a valued and welcomed addition to almost every type of racing you can think of.

Borich Earns Sixth Straight GNCC Championship
Champ edges Fowler in season finale to clinch title

Chris Borich and Walker Fowler headed into Saturday’s AMSOIL Ironman GNCC tied for the lead in the race for the 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series championship. In an all-out drag race to the finish, Borich emerged victorious to secure his sixth straight series championship.

As the green flag dropped for the highly anticipated finale, Fowler (Fab AmPro Yamaha/Lonestar/Maxxis/MXP) wasted no time in making his way to the front, and despite a bad jump off the start, Borich (Team Maxxis) quickly jumped into second close behind. Fowler commanded the lead for a majority of the two-hour race, while Borich took a more veteran approach in applying pressure from behind. However, in true Borich fashion, the champ kicked it up a notch on the final lap and the duo swapped lead positions several times as they encountered everything from lapped traffic to deep mud and even the occasional tree.

Terracross Brings Big Names and Big Action to UTV Racing
Series takes unique approach to UTV racing

What do you get when you combine a fleet of Polaris RZRs, a gnarly off-road course and a field of (mostly) celebrity drivers from both past and present? The answer can be summed up in one word – Terracross.

The Mystik Lubricants Terracross just wrapped up the 2014 season at Charlotte Motor speedway, closing out its biggest and best season yet and organizers are already at work making sure next year’s series is bigger and better.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, Terracross is a form of short course off-road racing where competitors race identical Polaris RZRs on a specially built course designed to test the limits of both man and machine. Although the tracks are not particularly long, they are littered with obstacles like moguls, tractor tires and, new for this year, an over under jump. As well, multiple line options are available throughout the course to create more opportunities to pass.

Fowler Wins ITP Powerline Park GNCC
Win ties Fowler with Borich in GNCC points chase

To call Walker Fowler’s sixth victory of the 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series a big one is not doing it justice. After picking up the win at the ITP Powerline Park GNCC, Fowler is now tied with five-time GNCC champion Chris Borich in the chase for the XC1 championship with just one round remaining.

Although it was Brent Sturdivant who led the early portion of the race after capturing his first-ever $250 Twin Air/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award, Fowler and Borich found their way to the front by the end of the opening lap. The lead duo set a blistering pace early on, where they opened up a two-minute gap on third place by the second lap.

XC1 Pro class rookies Brycen Neal and Jay Shadron settled into the top five, engaging in a battle of their own early on. Neal put his Dave Bayless Motorsports/Dirtworks/DC Cycles machine into third on the second lap, while Waynesburg Yamaha/GBC’s Shadron chased close behind.

The track conditions were very dusty so McGill’s holeshot allowed him to pull away from the group on the first lap, but Fowler was looming close behind. Fowler admittedly sat a ways back from McGill in the beginning to avoid the mass dust clouds that followed each racer.

Wienen Finishes ATVMX Season With Win at Loretta Lynn's
Seventh win of season for three-time series champ

Having already secured his third straight ATV Motocross National Championship two weeks earlier, Chad Wienen ended the 2014 season on a high note by securing his seventh win in the nine-round series at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. on Saturday, August 9th.

Rain was intermittent throughout the afternoon in Tennessee, but enough moisture fell to make for extremely challenging conditions on the Loretta Lynn’s layout.

The opening moto wasn’t without some drama on the opening lap as Wienen (Wienen Motorsports/SSi Decals/Walsh Yamaha) put himself in control early, grabbing the SSi Decals Holeshot Award over Motosport.com/RRR/Ford/DWT/Walsh Honda‘s John Natalie. Moments later Natalie made contact with Wienen while going for the lead, which forced his ATV to flip. Wienen emerged from the incident unscathed and just ahead of his teammate Thomas Brown. Once out front, the Yamaha duo never looked back and maintained about a two-second gap over the field, while mere bike lengths separated them from one another. Brown kept his boss and mentor honest, but was unable to make a move. The action behind them, however, was exciting.

One unique feature of the Snowshoe GNCC is the starting procedure. Based off the overall championship point standings, riders are placed in rows of five for a live engine “grand prix” style start, with 10 seconds between each row. Snowshoe GNCC winner, GT Thunder-backed Brian Wolf was a heavy favorite heading into this year’s race and the Ohio native proved exactly why as he jumped into the early lead on the adjusted time clock. However, it didn’t take long for N-Fab AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler to regain the lead by lap two. Reigning champion and current XC1 points leader Chris Borich held the second place position behind Fowler and rookie Jay Shadron sat close behind in third.

Precision/Maxxis Tires Chris Bithell got off to a fast start and grabbed the lead on the opening lap. Bithell was followed closely by N-Fab AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler and RacingPowersports.com/CST Tires/PirateMX.com’s Adam McGill early on.

While Borich didn’t get off to the best start, the five-time champion applied the pressure on Bithell, Fowler and McGill throughout the first half of the four-lap race. As the two lap-card fell, Borich made his charge towards the front where he first passed McGill for third. From there, it was an all-out battle between Bithell, Fowler, and Borich.

Riding high after his opening round victory two weeks ago, Chad Wienen (Motorsports/SSi Decals/Walsh Yamaha) used 2-1 moto finishes at Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tenn. to secure his second straight victory of the 2014 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship, sanctioned by AMA.

Just like at the opening round, Wienen’s path to victory wasn’t easy as his fellow contenders stepped up in their efforts to unseat the champion. Muddy Creek Raceway presented some changes to its popular layout, which were well received by the riders and played a major role in the outcome of each moto. From new jumps to off-camber corners, track position was at a premium and starting up front paid big dividends.

McGill, Borich complete XC1 podium

Walker Fowler (N-Fab/AmPro Yamaha) picked up his first win of 2014 at the Maxxis General GNCC in Washington, Ga., Round 2 of the 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series.

The dry track conditions at Round 2 was a welcome change from last weekend’s muddy season opener in Florida. RacingPowersports.com/CST Tires/PirateMX.com’s Adam McGill put himself in a favorable position early on after grabbing the $250 Twin Air/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot and tucked in behind Fowler on the opening lap.

Borich had trouble firing up his machine but even a last place start couldn’t stop the five-time champion from making his way to the front of the pack. Borich caught and passed McGill for the second place position after the halfway point, but the champ soon got caught up in a creek section that eventually cost him some time.

The 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis and sanctioned by AMA, kicked off its 13-round series with the inaugural running of the Moose Racing Mud Mucker GNCC. Borich got off to an early start aboard his Maxxis-backed machine after grabbing the $250 Twin Air/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot ahead of nearly twenty other XC1 Pro competitors. Precision/Maxxis Tires/Suzuki’s Chris Bithell, who took over the lead on the opening lap, quickly challenged Borich. Tips for the Aspiring ATV Racer From an Aspiring Racer
How to prepare your ATV for a season of racing

The GNCC series is upon us. Getting ready to commit to a season of bar banging fun is easy, but being ready is a bigger concern. The days of get on and run what you brought to the track are very much over in most classes and one young very talented rider from Dawsonville, Ga. we worked with last year found this out painfully quick.

Anna Byrd grew up circling the concrete oval in her quarter midget for a few years before stepping into the dirt kart arena. Anna also took a seat in a high-horsepower, late-model dirt race car for a few days of training with goals of someday becoming like her NASCAR heroes. Anna made her name and presence known often to the other drivers on the track and was affectionately named “Little Earnhardt” at some point during her quarter midget racing days. It wasn’t until she stepped into ATV racing that she realized that a pretty good challenge lay ahead. A 2007 Honda TRX450R was her rocket ship and Anna had her dreams set on the podium.
