While the Can-Am Maverick has been getting the lion's share of attention lately, BRP hasn't forgotten its original Side-by-Side. At its annual dealer show, BRP unveiled a new four-seat Can-Am Commander MAX 1000R in two iterations.

Based on the Can-Am Commander 800R and 1000 two-seat Side-by-Side vehicles, the Commander MAX platform features a 29.5-inch longer wheelbase and boasts unmatched comfort for the rear passengers. Available in both a DPS and XT package, the Commander MAX measures 147.8 inches long and 58.6 inches wide and comes in three colors (including camouflage). It also includes Dynamic Passenger Comfort, rear stadium seating and also has large 220mm front brakes.

Powering the Commander MAX is the Rotax 1000 80-degree V-twin, which produced 85 horsepower and is fed  by a 54mm Bosch throttle body and two VDO Seimens fuel injectors. BRP says its throttle-by-wire system works in conjunction with the 54mm Bosch throttle body to produce smooth throttle delivery even if the driverís foot is bouncing due to the terrain. A Continuously Variable Transmission features high, low, park, neutral & reverse.

A new spiral bevel gear rear differential was added to the Commander side-by-side to reduce noise.

The Double A-arm front suspension features 10 inches of travel and has what BRP calls the largest diameter front five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks in the industry.

In the rear is BRP's Trailing Torsional Independent Rear Suspension. BRP says TTI reduces tire wear and has 75 percent fewer parts than competitive designs. The rear end features 10 inches of travel and the largest diameter rear, five-way preload-adjustable gas shocks in the industry.

Calibrated specifically for use in the Commander line of side-by-side vehicles, BRPís Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering system offers variable steering assistance and is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. It also allows the driver to dial in his or her preference with three modes (Hi, Med, Lo).

All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration giving an even quicker engagement of the front differential. It progressively transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping one Ė automatically with no buttons to push or levers to pull. The system can lock up to 100 percent with no rev or speed limiter.

For greater stopping power, the Commander MAX units feature larger front 220mm disc brakes and 214mm rear disc brakes with twin-piston calipers. Connecting the Commander MAX to the ground are 27-inch Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires wrapped around 14-inch cast-aluminum wheels.

According to BRP, rear passengers benefit from optimal seating, viewing and comfort. The rear seats feature the same ergonomics as the front passenger seat, in terms of both lumbar and shoulder support as well and the overall seat design. Raised 3.5 inches higher than the front seats, the rear passenger seats offer increased visibility.

There are more than 1,050 cubic inches of storage in the glove box and another 799 cubic inches of storage under the fully adjustable driverís seat. And, in the center console, thereís another 79 cubic inches if space that can be accessed by either occupant.
