Safety features key to this introductory youth model

Kymco is tapping into the youth ATV market with its Mongoose 50 4T, a low-displacement ATV is meant for riders at least six years old.

Powered by a 4-stroke, air-cooled, 49cc engine, the Mongoose 50 4T was designed to give parents full control of power and performance.

The machine comes with a standard top speed of about 21 mph, but parents can adjust the throttle stop to restrict the speed even more.

Depending on the child’s level of confidence and skill, parents can turn the throttle stop inward so the rider can only access 1/2, 1/4, or 1/8, of the throttle. For even slower speeds, the throttle stop can be set to run just over idle.

Another key safety feature is the tether strap. Parents can hook the strap to their child’s belt or coat and if the child falls off, the engine will stop running.

The Mongoose 50 4T comes with front and rear drum brakes, and the levers are set on the handlebars just like a bicycle. It also comes equipped with a continuously variable transmission.

With a dry weight of 221 pounds, the vehicle is 54 inches long with 5.7 inches of ground clearance. For added stability around the corners, the Mongoose 50 4T has a wheelbase of 35.4 inches, which is wider than the 2007 Polaris Predator 50 and the 2007 Suzuki QuadSport Z50.

The Mongoose 50 4T has an MSRP of US$1,699.
