Transition machine offers a little more power but still safety focused

If you are looking for an ATV for your child but the introductory 50cc models seem a little too tame, Kymco has an option to consider with its Mongoose 90.

This vehicle, which is meant for children at least 12 years old, is a little larger than its 50cc cousins, but still gives parents full control over its speed.

Out of the box, the Mongoose is restricted to a maximum of about 21 mph, though the throttle stop can be adjusted to restrict the machine to slower speed.

Once the rider gains more experience and confidence and is ready for a little more speed, the restrictors can be removed to allow the Mongoose 90 to reach speeds of about 30 mph.

Another key safety feature is the tether strap. Parents can hook the strap to their child’s belt or coat and if the child falls off, the engine will stop running.

The Mongoose 90 is powered by 4-stroke, air-cooled, 89cc engine, and comes equipped with a continuously variable transmission and front and rear drum brakes.

With a dry weight of 232 pounds, the vehicle is 57 inches long, has 7.25 inches of ground clearance and a wheelbase of 37.9 inches.

The Mongoose 90 has an MSRP of US$1,999.
