Sport quad updated with fuel injection

Suzuki has redesigned its race-bred QuadSport Z400 for 2009 with several features from its big brother, the QuadRacer LT-R450.

Key among the new features is Suzuki’s fuel-injection system, which has a 36mm throttle body and a 12-hole injector.

Also new is the Engine Control Unit, equipped with a 16-bit CPU and a 96-kilobyte ROM unit. According to Suzuki, the system is programmed to offer improved traction, by selecting the optimum injection volume, injection timing and ignition timing based on throttle position, engine rpm and other data.

The Z400 also features new styling, including sharp fenders, overall slim design and removable headlight, all based off the R450.

Suzuki changed the rigidity balance of the chassis, which the company says will improve handling stability, chassis strength and overall performance, especially in rough terrain.

The front track of the Z400 was widened by 25mm, also to improve handling and stability, and Suzuki widened the footpegs to 46mm, the same as the R450.

Suzuki gave the Z400 a slimmer design and wider footpegs.

The Z400 is powered by a 398cc 4-stroke, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine with counter-balancer.

Also standard is a steel-alloy frame and removable steel sub-frame and aluminum swingarm. Long-travel, independent double A-arm front suspension is equipped with fully adjustable, piggyback reservoir-style shock absorbers with 8.5 inches of wheel travel. In the back is a linkage-type rear suspension, also with fully adjustable, piggyback reservoir-style shock with 9.1 inches of wheel travel.

Stopping power is provided by large 6.9 inch dual front disc brakes and single 8.6 inch rear disc brake, while the large 2.5-gallon fuel tank features two mounting points.

The 2009 Z400 retails for $6,199, which is $200 more than the 2008 model and $1,200 less than the R450.
