Suzuki pilot wins Round 3 of AMA Pro ATV Championship Series
Dustin Wimmer failed in his bid to claim his third straight victory in the AMA Pro ATV Championship Series, but a Suzuki rider did take home the title.
Wimmer’s Team Rockstar/MSR/Suzuki/Yoshimura/Pro Taper teammate Doug Gust, who finished second in both motos, picked up his first AMA Pro ATV win of the season on April 13 at Ballance Moto X in Bowling Green, Ky.
In the first moto, Can-Am’s John Natalie took the holeshot and led for much of the race before hitting a hole and flipping his ATV over the embankment. Natalie wasn’t hurt, but he was a bit shaken up.
“Man, I felt like I was playing football out there,” says Natalie. “I fell off and I just slid across the grass and the mud.”
With Natalie out of contention, Wimmer powered his way to the front to win the opening moto. Gust finished behind Wimmer in second, while Kawasaki’s Josh Creamer was third.
Gust got off to a great start in the second moto and won the holeshot, but couldn’t hold off a hard-charging Natalie. Recovered from his earlier crash, Natalie took the checkered flag. Gust finished second, while Yamaha’s Jasmine Plante was third.
Gust’s two second-place finishes were enough to secure the victory, the third in three events for Suzuki.
“I missed being on the podium a lot. I knew I had to get up here again,” says Gust. “My Team Suzuki mechanics really got me out front and I have them to thank for this. It’s going to be a great year. From here on in, we’ll keep going forward.”
The next race for the ITP Tires/Moose Racing AMA/ATVA ATV Championship is scheduled for April 26 to 27 at Birch Creek MX in Danville, Va.
