Kiger on podium in UTV race

National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley finished fifth in the Side-by-Side Class 1 in Round 5 of the 2011 WORCS Series, and National Guard Polaris Coastal Yokley Racing Team driver Scott Kiger finished third in the same Class. National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished eighth in the Pro ATV Class.

Summary – Side-by-Side Race

The National Guard Polaris Team made the long trip to Idaho after last week’s GNCC race in Pennsylvania. The Clay Peaks Motocross Park is less than an hour from Boise in a picturesque part of the state. The terrain was hilly with many long up and down sections, loamy motocross turns and sandy areas. The weather was perfect, temps in the 70s and low humidity.

Scott Kiger WORCS Racing

At the drop of the flag and into the first turn, Yokley was second and Kiger was fifth. There were a few sandy sections where the visibility was poor and racers from about fourth on back had to basically come to a standstill and let the silky dust settle before they could continue. This allowed the leader to stretch out his margin by quite a bit going into lap 2.

Once the racers separated a bit after a couple of laps, the dust was less of a problem. Yokley experienced a few issues, and uncharacteristically dropped back in the pack. Meanwhile, Kiger was getting into a fast race pace and moving toward the front. He actually turned the fastest lap of all the Side-by-Sides, but he had lost too much time on the first lap to challenge for the win. The National Guard Polaris Ranger RZR XP 900s were handling and working well.

Kiger finished in third with Yokley in fifth. Yokley maintained the lead in WORCS season points, and Kiger is in sixth position. The Side-by-Side team has a summer break from racing, and their next WORCS event is at the Washougal Washington Motocross Park.

Summary – Pro ATV Race

Jarrod McClure WORCS Racing

National Guard Coastal rider Jarrod McClure only had a week to heal up from his injuries sustained at the last GNCC race. ATV Pro practice was the first time that he was back on the bike since his accident, and he was sore but able to run a good pace. He did not earn a good gate pick for the pro race due to some problems in the timed practice.

When the gate dropped, McClure was squeezed and bounced around in the first turn. He was toward the back of the 14 rider pro class. Like the Side-by-Side race, the dust was very bad, allowing the front runners to get a big gap. McClure rode a good race and worked his way up to eighth by the finish of the 90-minute race. His battered body held up well and was able to finish strong. McClure’s next race is in three weeks at the Snowshoe Mountain GNCC.
