Fowler Bests Borich at Unadilla GNCC
Fourth win of 2014 for Yamaha pilot

Walker Fowler edged closer to the top of the XC1 Pro ATV standings this past weekend with a win at the Can-Am Unadilla GNCC in New Berlin, NY, round 10 of the 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis.

Coming off a big win at the previous round at Snowshoe, RacingPowersports.com/CST Tires/PirateMX.com’s Adam McGill kept his momentum rolling as he captured the $250 Twin Air/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award and the early lead.

However, Fowler (N-Fab AmPro Yamaha ) quickly made his way into the lead on the opening lap where he controlled the pace for the rest of the two-hour competition. Borich put his Maxxis-backed machine into the second place position early on but the five-time champion admitted to experiencing arm pump fatigue at the beginning of the race. Borich finally loosened up and started to make a charge on Fowler’s lead just after the halfway mark, but Fowler held onto the lead through the checkers for the overall victory.

Wienen Finishes ATVMX Season With Win at Loretta Lynn's
Seventh win of season for three-time series champ

Having already secured his third straight ATV Motocross National Championship two weeks earlier, Chad Wienen ended the 2014 season on a high note by securing his seventh win in the nine-round series at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. on Saturday, August 9th.

Rain was intermittent throughout the afternoon in Tennessee, but enough moisture fell to make for extremely challenging conditions on the Loretta Lynn’s layout.

The opening moto wasn’t without some drama on the opening lap as Wienen (Wienen Motorsports/SSi Decals/Walsh Yamaha) put himself in control early, grabbing the SSi Decals Holeshot Award over Motosport.com/RRR/Ford/DWT/Walsh Honda‘s John Natalie. Moments later Natalie made contact with Wienen while going for the lead, which forced his ATV to flip. Wienen emerged from the incident unscathed and just ahead of his teammate Thomas Brown. Once out front, the Yamaha duo never looked back and maintained about a two-second gap over the field, while mere bike lengths separated them from one another. Brown kept his boss and mentor honest, but was unable to make a move. The action behind them, however, was exciting.

Veteran Josh Upperman put his Baldwin Motorsports/PEP/Upperman Racing Honda up front early in the opening moto by grabbing the SSi Decals Holeshot Award. The Ohio native opened a small margin over BCS Performance Can-Am’s Josh Creamer and Wienen Motorsports/SSi Decals/Walsh Yamaha’s Wienen, and was able to set the pace for the first couple laps. Wienen began his charge to the front early, passing Creamer for second and then applying pressure on Upperman for the lead. By the time the field came around to complete the second lap, Wienen was out front and proceeded to open a multi-second gap over the field.

Adam McGill Earns First Win of 2014 at Snowshoe GNCC
Trio of Hondas find spot on XC1 podium

Adam McGill picked up his first win of the year at the picturesque and treacherous Snowshoe GNCC, round nine of the 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series in West Virginia.

One unique feature of the Snowshoe GNCC is the starting procedure. Based off the overall championship point standings, riders are placed in rows of five for a live engine “grand prix” style start, with 10 seconds between each row. Snowshoe GNCC winner, GT Thunder-backed Brian Wolf was a heavy favorite heading into this year’s race and the Ohio native proved exactly why as he jumped into the early lead on the adjusted time clock. However, it didn’t take long for N-Fab AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler to regain the lead by lap two. Reigning champion and current XC1 points leader Chris Borich held the second place position behind Fowler and rookie Jay Shadron sat close behind in third.

After a two-round absence from the top step of the podium, Wienen Motorsports/SSi Decals/Walsh Yamaha’s Chad Wienen returned to prominence on Saturday at the fifth stop of the 2014 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship.

The defending two-time series champion and current AMA Pro ATV Class points leader completed his most dominant effort of the season thus far with a 1-1 outing that allowed him to become the inaugural winner at Nashport, Ohio’s Briarcliff MX and the Built Ford Tough Briarcliff ATV National.

With its great soil and competitive layout, many felt as though the new track at Briarcliff would cater to great racing. Despite Wienen’s prowess, the newest stop of the championship lived up to expectations as the action for positions second through fifth was arguably the most thrilling battle the series has seen all season.

RacingPowersports.com/CST Tires/PirateMX.com’s Adam McGill got off to a great start after grabbing the $250 Twin Air/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award, leading the field of XC1 Pro riders into the first lap. Fowler (N-Fab AmPro Yamaha) stole the lead away on the opening lap and the duo diced it out for the lead position early on.

McGill took over the lead on the second lap, where he opted to pit for fuel, while Fowler chose to fly past his pits and into the lead. The rest of the front-runners joined McGill in pitting on lap two, allowing Fowler to break away out front.

Thomas Brown Edges Out Wienen to Win at Sunset Ridge MX
First win of 2014 for Yamaha rider

Chad Wienen’s bid for a fourth consecutive win at his hometown race at Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut, Illinois, came up just a couple points short on Saturday as he watched his Wienen Motorsports/SSi Decals/Walsh Yamaha teammate Thomas Brown capture his first win of the 2014 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship, sanctioned by AMA (ATVMX), season. The fourth round of the championship featured the most parity of the season thus far, with Brown becoming the fifth different rider to finish on the overall podium.

At the start of the first moto, it was Baldwin Motorsports/PEP/Upperman Racing Honda’s Josh Upperman who raced to the SSi Decals Holeshot. However, his lead was short lived as Motosport.com/RRR/Ford/DWT/Walsh/Fox Honda’s John Natalie took over the top spot in the second corner. Shortly thereafter, JB Racing/Cheerwine Can-Am’s Jeffrey Rastrelli moved to the front of the field to lead the first lap with his JB Racing/DWT/Mtn. Dew Live Wire Can-Am teammate Joel Hetrick in second, searching for back-to-back overall wins. Upperman settled into third with Natalie fourth and Wienen crossing the line in fifth, while Brown slotted into sixth.

The 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis, an AMA National Championship, reached its halfway mark this weekend with Round 7 of the 13-race championship series, and Fowler proved that there’s still plenty of racing left to go in 2014 as he closed the points gap on current leader and reigning XC1 Pro ATV Champion Chris Borich.

It was XC1 rookie Jay Shadron who captured his first career pro class holeshot to earn the $250 Twin Air/DeRisi Racing XC1 Holeshot Award. From there, the Waynesburg Yamaha rider held an impressive lead over the seasoned veterans of the class, including five-time champ Borich, Brent Sturdivant, Fowler and BNR Motorsports/Loctite’s Kevin Yoho, who all ran inside the top five early on.

The 2014 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship, sanctioned by AMA (ATVMX), returned to action after a six-week break at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, Pa. for the Maxxis ATV Stampede – the third round of the series.

Pennsylvania native Joel Hetrick (JB Racing/DWT/Mtn. Dew Live Wire Can-Am) relied on his win in the second moto to earn his first overall victory via tiebreaker over defending two-time series champion Chad Wienen.

High Point hosted a boisterous crowd on Saturday afternoon as the field entered the day looking to end Wienen’s hot streak, with the Wienen Motorsports/SSi Decals/Walsh Yamaha rider capturing the win at the opening two rounds and establishing a six-point lead in the AMA Pro ATV Class championship standings.

As the gate dropped on Moto 1, Wienen raced to his first SSi Decals Holeshot of the season with Motosport.com/RRR/Ford/DWT/Walsh/Fox Honda’s John Natalie, BCS Performance Can-Am’s Josh Creamer, Hetrick, and RootRiver Motorsports/Motowoz Suspension/ITP/JB Racing Honda’s Sean Taylor rounding out the top five. Off-Road Riding and Tactical Training: Part III
We practice long-range shooting and take on the Scrambler

Prior to what had turned out to be a golden opportunity to spend three days riding and receiving firearm instruction with Yamaha’s ATV and UTV marketing team at the Gunsite Academy near Prescott, Ariz., I have to admit that I had no idea just how focused the company’s Yamaha Outdoor branding really was.

Learning that Yamaha has forged alliances with outdoor and hunting groups such as Buckmasters and Ducks Unlimited, firearm organizations such as the National Rifle Association and Gunsite, and veterans’ groups such as Honored American Veterans Afield, really opened my eyes to how Yamaha has positioned itself differently and more actively than its competition. It’s just one guy’s opinion, but I think it’s a good fit, and Yamaha should be proud of these efforts.

We learn some rifle shooting techniques and get reacquainted with the Yamaha Viking

Earlier this week we introduced you to our three-part series on our adventure with Yamaha at the Gunsite Academy near Prescott, Arizona ( you can read about that here). We had an eventful day one on the shooting ranges, but there was a whole lot more in store for us on days two and three. For me, day two included getting the chance to get behind the wheel of Yamaha’s all-new 2014 Viking 700 SE Tactical Black UTV, and the time spent traversing Gunsite’s 200-acre range gave me a chance to once again reflect on the core values that Yamaha and Gunsite espouse.

Triads and Pentagonals

Regardless of whether you take one of Gunsite’s pistol courses or rifles courses, Gunsite’s curriculum is distilled into three core values, called the combat triad, which were created by Gunsite founder, Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper. Picturing the three sides of a triangle, Gunsite’s core values include gun handling, marksmanship and mindset. Serious shooters will drill and drill and drill on these core values in an attempt to master them, increasing their chances of survival in a combat situation.

The 2014 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis and sanctioned by AMA, kicked off its 13-round series with the inaugural running of the Moose Racing Mud Mucker GNCC. Tips for the Aspiring ATV Racer From an Aspiring Racer
How to prepare your ATV for a season of racing

The GNCC series is upon us. Getting ready to commit to a season of bar banging fun is easy, but being ready is a bigger concern. The days of get on and run what you brought to the track are very much over in most classes and one young very talented rider from Dawsonville, Ga. we worked with last year found this out painfully quick.

Anna Byrd grew up circling the concrete oval in her quarter midget for a few years before stepping into the dirt kart arena. Anna also took a seat in a high-horsepower, late-model dirt race car for a few days of training with goals of someday becoming like her NASCAR heroes. Anna made her name and presence known often to the other drivers on the track and was affectionately named “Little Earnhardt” at some point during her quarter midget racing days. It wasn’t until she stepped into ATV racing that she realized that a pretty good challenge lay ahead. A 2007 Honda TRX450R was her rocket ship and Anna had her dreams set on the podium.

2013 AIMExpo: REV'IT! Neptune and Poseidon GTX Jackets

We’ve seen some awesome off-road riding gear at the 2013 American International Motorcycle Expo in Orlando, Fla., but two jackets from REV’IT! stand out.

The Poseidon GTX ($899.99) is what you want to wear when Mother Nature is having a bad day. It feels surprisingly lightweight, but REV’IT! says its 3L GORE-TEX outer shell is 100 percent waterproof for riding in the most extreme conditions. To add some ventilation when the sun comes out, open up chest vents with the FidLock magnetic fastener system. Other features of the Poseidon GTX include CE-certified protection, reflective panels, collar hook and connection zippers.

2013 AIMExpo: Yamaha Grizzly 700 Utility Package

Yamaha has a couple of Grizzly models on display at the 2013 American International Motorcycle Expo in Orlando, Fla. Our favorite is this Grizzly 700 Utility Package that seems like it’s ready for just about anything.

The front end of this Grizzly really stands out, thanks in part to the PIAA 510 Series Super White Performance Lighting Kit ($243.49). While the lighting will help show the way when the sun goes down, it’s the stout front brush guard ($261.49), front rack extension ($158.49) and WARN Pro Vantage 2500 winch ($107.49) that show this ATV can tackle the toughest jobs and nastiest trails.

2013 AIMExpo: Trail Tech Voyager GPS

Trail Tech is displaying a number of interesting products at the American International Motorcycle Expo in Orlando, Fla., but we were most intrigued by the Voyager GPS.

Trail Tech boasts that the Voyager is the first GPS ever made specifically for off-road riders. It mounts right on the steering wheel (UTVS) or below the handlebars (ATVs/Dirt Bikes). Its 240×400 LCD screen displays GPS speed, distance, compass, altitude, temperature and maps. As well, it can run on an internal battery or off of the vehicle’s power. Finally, gloved hands should easily be able to control the joystick navigation and large, rubberized buttons.

Straight away the sheer size of the Quadski is shocking – it’s more than five feet wide and 10 feet long and looks every bit of it.
