ITP Releases Quadcross MX2 Tire

ITP has added to its lineup of ATV motocross tires with the new Quadcross MX2 froont tire.

ITP calls the MX2 the most advanced ATV motocross tire to date and says it features a revolutionary tread pattern and revamped construction.

Making the tread pattern stand out is a row of dimpled centerline lugs for forward traction, as well as twin rows of angled off-center lugs and strategically placed outer wall lugs for improved side bite. The carcass construction of the new Quadcross MX2 is infused with more natural rubber, which ITP says produces a harder tire compound to improve cornering and straight-line traction. Engineered specifically for motocross tracks, ITP boasts this new front tire delivers more predictable handling and industry-leading side bite.

“The Quadcross MX2 is engineered to outperform the competition by offering superior traction and handling while also offering controllable side bite,” says Pat McGuire, public relations / race support at ITP. “Our team of engineers did a fabulous job designing a well-rounded performance motocross tire that is at the forefront of ATV racing.”

Team UXC Racing Report: Steele Creek GNCC

Michael Swift finally put it all together for a win at the Steele Creek GNCC.

Michael Swift rode his UXC Racing Can-Am Renegade Xxc to victory this past weekend at the Steele Creek GNCC, the third round of the 2013 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series. The podium was stuffed with Can-Am machines, but Swift’s #207 topped the U2 class and finished fourth overall for the day.

“I think I was third on the first lap and got hung up behind a few other riders but put my head down to get to that number one spot,” says Swift. “I then noticed I couldn’t see my fuel gauge and though I might be low on fuel. So I stopped on the third lap for a splash and a fresh pair of goggles.”

After losing a spot during his stop, Swift regained the lead near the finish line and wouldn’t look back. From the podium Swift took the time to give a shout out to his friend Josh Fredrick, who was recently hospitalized due to a racing injury.

“I just want to dedicate this race to my friend Josh Fredrick and our thoughts are with him as well as his family that are going through this with him,” says Swift.

ATV Motocross Pros Head To Muddy Creek Raceway

Can Chad Wienen make it two-for-two to start the ATV Motocross season?

With one wet round of racing under its belt, the 2013 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship, sanctioned by AMA is set to visit Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tenn. this weekend for the AMSOIL Spring National.

Defending champion Chad Wienen picked up where he left things off in 2012, as he claimed the overall win at the series opener aboard his Wienen Motorsports SSi Walsh Yamaha presented by Maxxis Tires and Team Vollmer machine. Wienen currently holds the points lead early in the season, but with nine rounds to go, the defending champ has his work cut out for him with a field of rising talent and several veterans of the sport chasing close behind.

Josh Creamer won the second moto going away in the season opener.

The return of 2010 champion, Josh Creamer, proved to be as eventful as expected as he claimed second overall last round. The BCS Can-Am rider will be competing in the ATVMX Pro National Series full-time for the first time in three years and stands tied for second place in series points with Texas native Thomas Brown. Brown made a statement in Moto 1 aboard his new Wienen Motorsports SSi Walsh Yamaha presented by Maxxis Tires and Team Vollmer ride, finishing second in the opening round, ultimately securing third place overall for the weekend.

Although Corrosion Hetrick Racing’s Joel Hetrick currently sits in fifith place overall, it doesn’t reflect the young gun’s impressive race win at the season opener. Hetrick represents an all-new generation of Pro riders who will be gunning for this year’s National Championship.

GBC Motorsports Returns As Heartland Challenge Title Sponsor

The 2013 Heartland Challenge will have a familiar name attached, as GBC Motorsports will return as the event’s title sponsor. Scheduled to take place August 16-17 in Carlisle, Iowa, this is the sixth year for the ATV and UTV endurance race.

Race organizers have decided to change things up for the 2013 edition of the Heartland Challenge. The Pro class will be replaced by the Series Challenge. Each series will select riders to form a team that will represent their series. The winning team will be awarded a $4,000 payout while the series they represent will be awarded a $2,000 payout.

Each series can send a team of up to three riders to represent their series in this faceoff. The only stipulation is that each team may only have one rider that has participated in GNCC Pro or Pro-Am events within the past three years.

“We sat down with GBC and we all agreed we wanted to make this race even better,” says Tracy Kyner, race organizer. “We all wanted to step outside the box, to create a race that has the opportunity to represent the riders, their state, and the people out there giving so much of their time to create these different series.”

Borich Looks To Stay Perfect FMF Steele Creek GNCC

Chris Borich and Walker Fowler sit 1-2 in the standings after two rounds.

Anybody who thought Chris Borich might start to take it easy after winning his fourth straight GNCC XC1 Pro ATV class title has been proven wrong. Borich is perfect after two rounds of the 2013 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series and he’ll try to make it three-for-three at this weekend’s FMF Steele Creek GNCC in Morganton, NC.

While Borich enjoys life at the top of the mountain, the battle for second through 10th place is a lot less predictable with a deep field of talent on this year’s front line. AmPro Yamaha’s Walker Fowler currently sits in second place as he continues to chase Borich for a win. Fowler has struggled with poor starts in the first two rounds but the 20-year-old has successfully charged his way through the pack to secure two solid podium finishes so far this season.

Can-Am ATV Racer Josh Frederick Suffers Serious Back Injury

Motoworks / Can-Am pro racer Josh Frederick suffered a serious back injury after crashing during the Pro ATV race Sunday at round three of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Medical crews were on the scene quickly and, after complaining of the loss of feeling to his legs, he was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. Further examination revealed that Frederick’s T-5 vertebrae was fractured during the violent crash. Frederick was then flown to a level-one trauma center in Las Vegas for additional examinations and surgery.

Frederick underwent surgery Sunday evening to remove the piece of bone lodged in his spine and his back was fused. The surgery was successful and Frederick is now resting comfortably at the hospital. He did not regain feeling to his legs after the surgery and due to the amount of swelling it is not currently possible to determine a time frame for potential recovery or paralysis. Josh has been fitted with a back brace and on Tuesday he will start therapy.

“Josh is such a wonderful person, a devoted father and husband and a dedicated professional racer. While it deeply saddens me to learn of the severity of this injury, I also know that Josh is an extremely hard worker, a fighter and a true champion, I pray that he will persevere and overcome this challenge,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “Josh and his family are in the thoughts and prayers of everyone at BRP and the entire Can-Am racing family.”

Can-Am Race Report: Maxxis General GNCC

It may be a new season, but Can-Am 4×4 ATV racers continue to outshine the competition in the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series. Can-Am machines swept all five 4×4 class and placed two riders on the overall morning podium at the Maxxis General GNCC in Washington, Ga.

In the first round of side-by-side vehicle racing in Georgia, a total of 11 Can-Am Maverick 1000R racers competed with four Can-Am vehicles earning a podium finish in each of the four UTV classes.

“Having Can-Am ATV racers dominate their morning 4×4 classes and to see Kevin Trantham and Robert Smith on the morning podium was great. It was a good weekend in Georgia overall, as we had numerous podiums, including two for the new Can-Am Maverick 1000R in its GNCC side-by-side racing debut,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “It was a close finish for Kyle Chaney and his Maverick 1000R X rs in its first GNCC side-by-side event, as he narrowly missed taking the overall race win. This was a good debut for the Maverick and we fully expect to improve our results at round two in late April.”

Yokley Racing Report: Maxxis General GNCC

William Yokley (Polaris / Coastal / CST / National Guard / Yoshimura / Yokley Racing) opened the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) series UTV season with a win at the Maxxis General GNCC. Yokley finished first overall and first in the XC1 Modified Class. Team driver Scott Kiger finished fourth overall and fourth in the same class. A total of 46 side-by-sides were competing in the race, including 22 XC1 Modified teams. Yokley’s guest passenger was his wife Tina, and Scott’s passenger was Tyler King.

Summary

The 2013 GNCC Side by Side season started out well for the team in Georgia. After a successful 2012 season, the team spent the winter building new race machines and fine tuning the new 2013 Polaris RZR XP-900s.

The General GNCC featured red Georgia clay soil, tight, technical woods sections linked by high-speed open fields. It was 75 degrees, sunny and windy, and the course was very dusty, especially in the fields. The shorter than usual three-mile track made for some tight racing.

New for this season is a dead engine start, and the field lined up in rows of five. When the flag dropped, Yokley’s machine did not immediately fire and he was last going into the woods. Kiger got a good start and ran up front most of the race. The track was short and the leaders encountered lapped machines on the second lap, so traffic played an important part of the race. Yokley worked his way up to where he was near the lead when he heavily rear-ended a disabled machine in the blinding dust. He was fortunately able to continue once he got unhooked, thank goodness for a strong front bumper!

Team ITP Race Report: Maxxis General GNCC

Team ITP was out in full force at the Maxxis General GNCC, picking up four class victories and eight podiums. Leading the way was defending Super Senior (45+) class champion Dave Simmons, who won his class and also took his second straight morning overall. Team ITP racers also earned class victories in A 22+, A/B 40+ and College B (16-21).

“Team ITP had another great GNCC weekend earning four class victories. Of course class wins are wonderful, but when we consistently see many of our team riders earning podiums we’re very pleased,” says Pat McGuire, public relations and race support at ITP. “Having our racers earn podiums in different age groups, the 4×4 classes, on sport quads and in side by sides really shows that ITP is dedicated to the racer and product development no matter the vehicle.”

Simmons, who has now won 23 consecutive races since 2011, won the Super Senior (45+) class by more than 11 minutes. He also earned the top spot on the morning overall podium finishing more than a minute ahead of the second-place finisher. The other four Team ITP racers to win their class were William “Duck” Lloyd (A 22+), Brian Schmid (A/B 40+) and Justin Paul (College B 16-21). Lloyd, who also finished in the top 25 in the morning overall, is 2-for-2 in 2013 racing on ITP tires. Schmid notched his first win and climbed into the class point’s lead after Georgia. Paul, Hilltop Motorsports / ITP, is three points in front of his teammate Brigham Patterson, who took fourth at Aonia Pass.

The world’s top ATV motocross athletes are back in action this weekend as the 2013 Mtn. Dew ATV Motocross National Championship kicks off at Aonia Pass MX Park in Washington, Ga.

GBC Motorsports Race Report: Dirt Series Round 1

GBC Motorsports riders earned several class wins in the season-opening round of the 2013 Dirt Series at Lake Elsinore Motorsports Park in Lake Elsinore, Calif.

The Quad Pro class proved to be not only an exciting battle in both motos, but it marked the return to competition for the former ATV pro and current GBC Motorsports Sales Rep Kory Ellis. Battling all day long with defending champion Dylan Dixon, Ellis passed Dixon on the last lap during the first moto to take the Race 1 win. Race 2 ended up much the same, with another late pass by Ellis locking away the Overall win. It was a good start to the season for the pair of GBC riders and featured strong performances on GBC Bomb Squad MX tires.

“The Dirt Series is really run well and it looked like so much fun last year that I decided to give it a go at the opener,” says Ellis. “We’re thrilled to once again be a part of the Dirt Series. GBC Motorsports is proud to support local race series like this because it gives us the chance to interact with the young racers that are going to carry this sport into the future.”

Jagged X Polaris RZR XP 4 900 Wins San Felipe 250 UTV Class

Photo courtesy Joey DiGiovanni // UTVUnderground.com

At long last, side-by-sides made their debut in the SCORE series as 13 units lined up at the start of the 2013 San Felipe 250. Jagged X’s Matt Parks and Jason Spiess took the checkered flag and were one of only two teams to finish the race.

The San Felipe 250 is notorious for being the roughest race in North America with endless whoops, deep silt and rocky sand washes. But after Parks did his pre-run, he knew that this would be a race of survival.

“The UTVs start dead last in SCORE races and after 240 vehicles had been through the course, it was unbelievably rough. So, we just decided to set a steady pace and take care of the car,” says Parks.

Borich Ready To Defend Title At GNCC Opener

Chris Borich begins his quest for his fifth straight AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series championship this weekend at the season-opening Moose Racing Westgate River Ranch GNCC.

Borich’s closest pursuer in 2012, Ohio’s Walker Fowler, returns to the front line this year aboard an all-new AmPro Yamaha team. As a rising star in the GNCC ranks, Fowler has chalked several wins throughout his career-including one win over Borich last season-but the young gun has found that beating the champ isn’t an easy feat. It’s also not one that Fowler plans to back away from any time soon.

West Virginia’s Adam McGill switched to a privateer-backed effort in 2012, causing a little bit of stress on his final results due to mechanical failures along the way. However, McGill managed to grab a race-win late in the season to give him fourth place overall in XC1 and a high level of confidence leading into the new season. McGill returns aboard his Lonestar/Precision/ITP Honda with high hopes of contesting for the championship.

Pennsylvania’s Chris Bithell will make his debut aboard a Bithell Racing Suzuki machine in 2013, a pretty drastic change from the last couple of seasons with the Factory Can-Am squad. However, a change in pace may be just what Bithell needs to put him over the edge for race wins this season.

Taylor Kiser reports that he will not be lining up for the season opener in his home state this weekend, and as of right now he does not have plans to contest the XC1 championship in 2013.

Can-Am Race Report: LOORS Round 1, TQRA Round 1

Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs racers Steve Beilman and Wayne Matlock finished 1-2 at the UTV Open class at round one of the 2013 Lucas Oil Off Road Series (LOORS) at Glen Helen Raceway in Southern California. In Texas, Louis Powersports / Can-Am DS 450 Pro Cody Miller won both the Open Expert (Pro) and Pro-Am classes at round one of the Dockside Marine Texhoma Quad Racing Association (TQRA) series.

“It’s great to have off-road racing veterans like Wayne Matlock and Steve Beilman behind the wheel of the new Maverick 1000R X rs and even better to have them put it on the LOORS podium. These guys basically had stock vehicles, sans the cage and doors, yet still dominated the UTV Open class at round one,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “Their genuine excitement about the Maverick, along with their recent racing success is not only contagious, but it also reinforces that fact that our all-new high-performance side-by-side vehicle is purpose-built to win races.”

Despite limited practice time, Matlock qualified first in the UTV Open class, while Beilman secured the third spot on the line. At the start of the main event, a modified competitive vehicle edged Matlock for the holeshot, but both he and Beilman locked in behind the leader and, by lap two, were already pressuring him for the lead. Matlock was on rear bumper waiting for a time to pass, but was hampered when the leader slowed over a jump. Beilman took advantage of the leader’s pause and pinned it over a tabletop jump and literally leapt to the front, passing both the leader and Matlock. From there, Beilman maintained a steady pace and tried to extend his lead.

Matlock made his move and made a timely pass after the finish line jump at the start of the fourth lap. Matlock’s pass put the Maverick pilots in first and second with several laps remaining. However, a mandatory caution allowed Matlock to reel in Beilman and during the final six laps the two racers put on a show, as they were bumper-to-bumper to the finish line. At the checkers, Beilman held off his fellow Can-Am racer by one second to take the first-ever LOORS win with the Maverick 1000R.

Maverick Earns First Official Race Win

You knew it wouldn’t take long for the new Can-Am Maverick 1000 X rs to start winning races. Team JB Off Road Racing / Can-Am pilot Kyle Chaney will go down in the history books as the first to take the checkers in a Maverick after he won the 2013 UTV Rally Raid Northern Series opening event in Oliver Springs, Tenn. Chaney pulled a commanding lead over the field of more than 30 entries to win not only the series’ premier unlimited C class, but also the overall event victory at the four-hour day / night race held at Windrock Park.

“We’re thrilled to have Kyle Chaney race the Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side vehicle to victory in the growing UTV Rally Raid series. He definitely showcased the capabilities of the essentially stock Maverick 1000R X rs in the Tennessee mountains during this rugged four-hour event,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “Despite drastically changing weather and track conditions throughout the grueling endurance race, Chaney used the abilities of the Can-Am Maverick to his advantage and distanced himself from the rest of the pack at the UTV Rally Raid Northern Series opener. This was a very big victory for Kyle, the Can-Am Maverick and BRP and we will build upon this success as the season progresses.”

Polaris Racing/Holz Racing’s Beau Baron picked up his second straight win to start the season at WORCS Round 2 in Primm, Nev. Baron piloted his Polaris RZR XP 900 to the finish line in front of every other Side-by-Side in the field, winning the Pro Production class. Second would go to Ryan Piplic, also in a RZR XP 900. Frederick Pilots Maverick To Podium At WORCS Round 2

Team Motoworks / Can-Am Pro Josh Frederick had a busy but successful weekend at the second round of the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) in Primm, Nev. He piloted his Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs Side-by-Side to a third-place podium finish and his DS 450 ATV to second overall. Fellow SxS Pro Production side-by-side class and Can-Am Maverick racer Pablo Veglia finished fifth.

“We were very pleased with how round two turned out, having Josh Frederick reach both Pro class podiums with the Maverick and DS 450. I was definitely happy with how Josh raced and finished with the Maverick 1000R X rs in just his second WORCS event. Coming from the fifth row at the start, and as far back as 20th, to earn a top-three finish shows just how skilled both he and the Maverick are,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “To have two of the five Maverick side-by-side vehicles entered, finish in the top five of the highly competitive Pro Production 1000 class is great and definitely the momentum that we were looking for which we can build upon.”

For Frederick and the Maverick 1000R, round two, held at Buffalo Bill’s, just outside of Las Vegas, served as redemption for an unlucky series opener a few weeks prior when he failed to finish. In Primm, Frederick was determined to move forward from his fifth-row starting spot during the six-lap Pro race. After lap one, Frederick was in 15th, but on the move. One lap later he had picked off five racers and cracked the top 10. By the fourth lap, the Nevada resident had pushed his Maverick 1000R X rs to fourth overall. He cracked into the top three on lap five and held it all the way to the finish for the first-ever WORCS podium finish for the new Can-Am Maverick. Frederick had a similar climb in the Pro ATV class, as he came from eighth place to eventually put his Motoworks-tuned DS 450 on the podium.

Can-Am Maverick 1000R X Rs Makes Racing Debut at WORCS Round 1

James Hill rode his Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs to a sixth place finish in the SxS Pro Production class.

The opening round of the 2013 WORCS series at Canyon MX in Peoria, Ariz. marked the competitive debut of the Can-Am Maverick 1000R X rs.

Dismal track conditions, which included deep mud, standing water and wet sand in additional to the normal desert obstacles, made for a challenging start to the 2013 season. Two Can-Am racers, James Hill and David Martinez, posted top 10 finishes in the SxS Pro Production class in their Maverick 1000R X rs vehicles.

Josh Frederick was sitting in the top five before a mechanical issue ended his race.

“Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and the overall event became a real race for survival in the mud and deep, standing water. In its competition debut, the Can-Am Maverick 1000R side-by-side vehicle’s top finish was sixth, though we competed in the lead pack early on,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “We are very optimistic for the upcoming events, as all the drivers are thrilled with the performance and handling of the Maverick on the race course. We all realize that it is a long season and we are carrying a positive attitude about the eight rounds of WORCS racing that remain.”

Hill (IMG Racing) finished in sixth place out of 23 competitors in the side-by-side Pro ranks. He battled through the muck, coming from 19th after the first lap to find a spot in the top 10 by lap five. He picked up two more spot on the final lap. Martinez, of Del Amo Motorsports / Murray Motorsports, finished the day in 10th.

GBC Motorsports decided to celebrate its successful year in ATV and UTV racing by looking back at the performance of its sponsored riders in 2012.

WORCS Series

Kayla Smith made her mark in 2012 with impressive performances throughout the year. Kicking off the WORCS season with a third place finish in the SXS Production 700 class, Smith would go on to land on the podium five more times in six races. With class wins at Race Town 395 and the Honolulu Hills finale, Kayla proved that she is capable of racing at a high level for any racer. The fact that she is 16 years old (and that some of her competitors have been racing since before she was born) makes her talent and vision behind the wheel even more remarkable. Smith finished the series in third place in her class aboard her GBC Dirt Commanders.

Yamaha Quad-X Racing Series

Dylan Dixon was one of the most talked-about up-and-comers on the West Coast racing scene, and his strong performances in the Quad-X Racing Series have something to do with that. Finding the podium in seven out of ten races, Dixon’s run through the Pro-Am class was highlighted by a Round 8 class win at Speedworld MX. Dixon improved on his second place 2011 finish by winning the Pro-Am class in 2012, and is on the verge of breaking into the Pro ranks.

National Guard / Coastal / Bowers Motorcycle Supplies / Yokley Racing Team rider Jarrod McClure finished second in the XC1 Pro ATV class. Meanwhile, National Guard / Polaris / Coastal / Yoshimura / DragonFire / Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley won the XC1 Modified UTV class with National Guard / Polaris / Coastal / Yoshimura / Yokley Racing Team driver Scott Kiger finishing fourth in the same class. William’s guest passenger was his wife Tina, and Scott’s passenger was Robbie Ingram.

Summary – ATV

With only two races left in the 2012 GNCC Pro ATV calendar, everyone wants to finish the season out strong. Jarrod McClure has always done well at the Ironman, and was looking forward to the race. Heavy rain on Friday made sure that the course would be plenty challenging with lots of mudholes and slick hills.

McClure got a good start and entered the woods in third place. He passed the first two racers and completed lap 1 in the lead. It was a tight five-way battle for the lead that was constantly changing. There were so many muddy hills and deep ruts that everyone was getting stuck once or twice a lap. The 10,000 spectators were scattered all along the track, especially on the hill climbs and mudholes. The fans would jump right in and help the racers who got stuck.

On the fourth and final lap, several of the leaders got stuck on the steepest hillclimb, including McClure. The fans grabbed hold of his machine and got him going with little delay. He got out in the final high speed cornfield section with nobody close to him. He didn’t know if he was first or fifth, so he charged as hard as possible to the finish. At the finish, he was a close second place, his best finish of the year! He moved up to fifth in the season points with just one race to go at Loretta Lynns Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. on Nov. 3.

Jarrod McClure’s Sponsors: Yokley Racing, Army National Guard, Coastal Racing, Kenda Tires, Bowers Motorcycle Supplies, EXIT Suspension, KG Clutches, Roll Design, XC Bob.com, Douglas Wheel Technology, Yoshimura, Moto Pro Training, Moose, IMS/Roll, Tireballs, G-4 Graphics, IMS, PowerMadd, Bell Helmets, Precision, DP Brakes and Quad Tech.

The long-time Yamaha rider and GNCC icon has made history by securing her ninth overall women’s ATV series title and announced her retirement atop the Ironman podium.

With nine titles, my health, friends and memories for a lifetime, I finally feel this is the right time for me.”

Cecco clinched her historic championship at the last GNCC round October 6 in St. Clairsville, Ohio, allowing her to enjoy the Ironman knowing her championship is already in the books.
