ITP Racing Review: 2011 National MX Season

ITP was once again heavily involved in the ATV MX National Championship Series and would like to recognize the success of its top riders. The following is taken from an ITP press release.

Whether they chose ITP’s Holeshot or QuadCross lines of tires or T-9 Pro Series wheels, these riders demonstrated the talent and commitment it takes to set themselves apart from the competition.

For example, Jeffrey Rastrelli of Palm City, Florida, came out on top of an extremely hard-fought Pro Am Unlimited championship battle. He captured four overall wins in the series’ 11 events, and was in the top three at every race but one. Rastrelli also competed in the Pro Am Production class and finished the season with fourth place in the points, taking one victory and five podiums along the way.

Warnia Wins WORCS Pro ATV Championship

Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 racer Jeremie Warnia won the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) Pro-class Championship with a second-place finish at the finale in Surprise, Ariz. Teammate Josh Frederick, who was tied with Warnia for the Pro class points lead heading into the final race, finished third and only two points behind Warnia in the chase for the series title. Collins Webster won the WORCS Pro-Am Championship by winning the final race aboard his Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450.

“I couldn’t be happier for Jeremie Warnia and for the Motoworks / Can-Am team’s outstanding effort in 2011,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “Both Jeremie and Josh Frederick were extremely competitive and very consistent all season long, which is the mark of both a top-notch program and a professional approach from a riders’ perspective. They only missed one Pro class podium the entire season and notched six victories in nine races. While they both deserved to win, Jeremie prevailed and I’m thrilled that he could earn his first WORCS title.”

The WORCS finale was held at Speed World MX and featured wet, muddy conditions due to heavy and steady rains throughout the night. The poor conditions early on made the start of the race even more important. Warnia got a good start as he rocketed off the line and tucked into second place behind the race leader. Frederick was less fortunate than his teammate but still was in the top five at the start. However, the 2010 WORCS Champion fell to seventh after the first lap and had to play catch up the remainder of the race. By lap six, he had passed his way into third place, but could not catch the top-two racers.

Yokley Clinches WORCS Side-by-Side Championship

Just a few weeks after winning the GNCC “Open Modified” UTV Championship in his National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Ranger RZR XP 900, William Yokley took the WORCS Racing Side-by-Side 1 Championship his first year racing the series.

“We, once again, would like to congratulate William on another championship,” says Donna Beadle, race team manager for Polaris Racing. “Both William and teammate Scott Kiger have been very dedicated to developing and racing the Ranger RZR XP 900 and we couldn’t be happier with the result.”

The last side-by-side WORCS race of the season was hosted at Speed World MX, in Surprise, Ariz. Yokley only needed to finish in the top eight to clinch the championship so he planned to be a little less aggressive than usual. It was a good thing he had a points cushion because his day did not go as planned and he ended up finishing ninth but was still able to earn the championship by, thanks to some help from Kiger.

Dustin Nelson Dominates Yamaha QuadX Series Finale

Yamaha Racing’s Dustin Nelson capped his record fifth QuadX Series Championship at Glen Helen Raceway in Southern California on Oct. 29, dominating the track and winning both of the final two Pro 450 Production motos.

Nelson pulled holeshots and never looked back in the two Pro motos, highlighting his historic season in which he won all eight QuadX Series stops throughout Southern California and Arizona including 11 of 12 total motos.

“To have a season like we did, the equipment had to be flawless – and everything worked great round after round,” says Nelson. “We had strong engines to get us out front with no failures during the year. In fact, we used the same chassis and the same engine, with normal rebuilds only, all year.”

“Dustin dominated the series on his YFZ450R and stayed on top of the podium at every stop,” says Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s marketing manager who was in attendance at the QuadX Series Finale. “He’s a true champion to keep pushing to take the top spot on the podium even after clinching the championship back at the last stop in Arizona. It was great to see him stay true to form and win both motos at Glen Helen to give himself, Yamaha and the YFZ450R a perfect season.”

Can-Am Commander Wins Morocco Rally

BRP’s Can-Am Commander, driven by Francisco Lopez and co-pilot Claudio Troncoso, won the Morocco Rally in the UTV category after covering 2,000 kilometers (1,242 miles) of challenging African terrain.

The duo made international headlines last week due to their impressive finish in the Morocco Rally, becoming the only UTV competitor to complete the six gruelling stages of the 2011 edition, in addition to placing 21st within the car category.

Lopez and his Can-Am Nextel Team attributed their victory to the pilots’ experience, the Can-Am Commander SSV’s outstanding performance, and the unwavering support of Jaton Racing, a Spanish company that prepared the side-by-side vehicle for the race, and provided mechanical assistance through its duration.

“Our starting objective for the race was clear: test the Can-Am Commander SSV’s capacity in difficult terrains to ensure a solid performance in the 2012 Dakar. We weren’t aspiring to win,” Lopez commented after the race. “By the last day, we had a new objective: become the first vehicle in the history of UTVs to finish the Morocco Rally.”

GBC Motorsports Riders Help Raise Breast Cancer Awareness

The Ironman GNCC has long been known as the largest and most prestigious event on the series schedule. However, for the second year in a row this stop on the tour has been about something bigger than racing itself.

The weekend started off with GBC team riders Johnny Gallagher and Jeff Pickens making a special visit to a local Indiana elementary school where the riders spoke to hundreds of fifth- and sixth-grade students about Breast Cancer Awareness. The two racers even helped the students fashion pink ribbon pins that would allow them free entry to the Ironman festivities for the weekend.

“I really enjoyed spending time with the kids, and it was great to see many of them actually make it out to the race wearing their pins and cheering us on,” says Jeff Pickens after his grueling two-hour race on Saturday afternoon.

“I couldn’t believe how many of the students knew all about our racing, and it felt good to see them so enthused about learning more about such an important cause,” commented Johnny Gallagher upon leaving New Market Elementary on Friday.

Can-Am Racers Earn XC1 Podium and 4×4 Wins at Ironman GNCC

Adam McGill fought his way to a third-place finish at the Ironman GNCC.

Warnert Racing / Can-Am DS 450 Pro racer Adam McGill stood tall on the all-pink GNCC cancer awareness podium after finishing third in the Pro XC1 class despite gruelling conditions at the Ironman GNCC course in Crawfordsville, Ind. Can-Am X-Team members Clifton Beasley, Forrest Whorton and Zac Zakowski each won their respective class in morning action.

“McGill and Bithell really battled out there today and I was proud of the effort they put forth on their Can-Am DS 450 ATVs. Adam notched his fourth consecutive XC1 podium and led three laps of the race. Chris put in an inspiring ride, coming from dead last at the start of the race to finish fourth,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “Can-Am X-Team racers Cliff Beasley and Zac Zakowski each made a powerful statement with their class victories in Indiana.”

Coming into the Ironman GNCC, McGill held second place in the XC1 point standings and needed to win at the final two rounds of the series for a shot at the championship. After leading the first three laps, it looked as if McGill would keep the hopes for a 2011 title alive, but lapped traffic slowed his pace on lap four and he dropped to fourth place. He then picked up the pace to reclaim the third-place position. He moved to within striking distance of first and second place at the end of the race, but had to settle for third.

FRE/KTM ATV Race Report: Ironman GNCC
FRE/KTM rider Bryan Cook suffered a crash at the beginning of his race this past weekend at the thirteenth round of the ATV GNCC Series to finish in 11th place after a two-hour race against the clock.

Cook launched off the start and was sitting at the front of the pack when he collided with Taylor Kiser. Both riders were thrown off their ATVs and had to untangle their quads before they could get back to the race. The two remounted in last place. One lap later, Cook had to make an unscheduled pit stop for repairs from the damage sustained in his first turn crash. This stop put him 10 minutes behind the lead group.

Cook rode decently once he returned to the course but was unable to make up the time lost and finished in a disappointing 11th place. With one more round left, Cook is looking forward to keeping it on all four wheels and running inside the top five to end the season.

There are also high speed open-field sections to showcase the horsepower and handling of the Ranger RZR XP900.

At the start, Yokley was fifth in the first turn, with teammate Kiger right next to him. They went into the woods in third and fourth. They moved up to second and third at the completion of lap 1. Yokley knew he could wrap up the title by finishing second, so he raced conservatively, making sure he took care of his equipment and not taking big chances with lappers. The team finished out the race in second and third, with both machines on the podium.

Parks Wins Bluewater Desert Challenge UTV Race in RZR 4

Matt Parks started the weekend seven points out of the lead in the Best In The Desert race series. He needed a win at the Bluewater Desert Challenge to remain in contention with only one more race on the schedule. Driving his “Baja Bobsled,” a custom 2-seat Polaris RZR 4 built by Holz Racing Products, Matt and his co-pilots, Jason Spiess (Saturday) and Mike Carr (Sunday), raced aggressively through the dust.

“The Kroyer built RZR 800 engine ran flawlessly both days,” says Matt. “It was really put to the test in the deep sand and silt.”

Parks finished second on Saturday, 1:35 behind the first-place UTV Pro – the Jagged X Ranger RZR XP 900. Like Saturday, the 15-UTV field started behind Jeep Speed and Baja Bug Classes. Jagged X had a strong start off the line and Parks chased him through the pack of Jeeps and Bugs that started ahead.

Can-Am DS 450 Racers Win Seven NEATV-MX Championships

A broken chain derailed Josh Creamer's championship hopes.

Can-Am DS 450 racers won seven class championships and earned a total of 15 top-three finishes in other classes after the final race of the 2011 New England ATV Motocross series.

Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 Pro class competitor Josh Creamer came up 15 points short in his quest for a Pro championship due to a broken chain in the first Pro class moto.

“I was proud of Josh Creamer’s effort this year and second place is nothing to be ashamed of that’s for sure. A broken chain is out of your control, but, sadly, it’s part of racing,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “I was pleased to see so many Can-Am DS 450 ATVs compete in the New England MX series this year and to have seven amateur class titles.”

Creamer held a 10-point advantage in the Pro class standings coming into the finale at Hemonds MX in Minot, Maine. However, a broken chain on the first lap of the first Pro class moto resulted in a DNF and mathematically eliminated Creamer for the Pro title chase. The skilled pro remained focused, however, and won the second moto to go along with a double-moto sweep in the Pro-Am class. Creamer ended up second overall in both the Pro and Pro-Am classes aboard his Can-Am DS 450.

Can-Am ATV Racers Earn Multiple Wins at Powerline Park GNCC

Warnert Racing / Can-Am DS 450 racer Adam McGill finished third in the XC1 Pro class at the Powerline Park Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) race held over the weekend in St. Clairsville, Ohio. In the morning session, Can-Am X-team racers Zac Zakowski, Forrest Whorton and Kevin Trantham each won their respective classes aboard Can-Am Outlander ATVs.

“McGill rode well and was actually in contention for the win a couple of times before eventually finishing third overall. I’m happy to see him on the XC1 podium again and earn a top three overall finish,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “Our Can-Am X-Team racers continue to excel on their Outlander ATVs. It was great to see Zac ride so well today and earn his first win this season in the 4×4 Open class. It was also nice to see Zac’s teammate Kevin Trantham get back to his winning ways in the 4×4 Lites. I’m also really happy for Forrest Whorton as today he clinched the 4×4 Super Senior 45+ championship aboard his Can-Am.”

McGill held the early lead in the XC1 class. Just before lap two, he dropped one spot after having difficulty in one of the track’s muddy sections. However, on lap three, McGill put in the fastest lap of the day in the Pro class and was less than a second behind the leader. He then lost time on the next lap and fell to third. That’s where he stayed until the finish line. It was the third straight XC1 podium finish for McGill.

National Guard Polaris Coastal Yokley Racing Team driver Scott Kiger finished 31st Overall and 17th in the same class after being involved in a mishap. National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing Pro ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished sixth Overall and fifth in the XC1 Pro ATV class. There were 145 total entries with 14 XC1 Pro riders.

Summary – Side by Side

Powerline Park is always a popular venue with both riders and spectators. The course offers fast open-field sections, tight, technical trails with lots of natural elevation changes. Rain during the week made the course a little slick, but the competitors agreed that it was a blast to race on.

The National Guard Polaris Team started on the first row, and as they headed into the woods, Yokley was in third and Kiger a few positions further back. There was a brief bottleneck when one racer got crossed up in a tight section allowing all the others to close in bumper to bumper. Yokley finished lap 1 in third and Kiger was seventh. By lap 3, Yokley was in the lead with Kiger in third, and the team was looking good for podium finishes.

Can-Am Riders Dominate Montreal Supermotocross

In front of 45,000 fans, Can-Am X-Team Pro ATV racer Richard Pelchat topped an all-Can-Am DS 450 podium in winning the ATV portion of the Montreal Supermotocross event held at Olympic Stadium in Quebec, Canada. Fellow Can-Am racer Mark Holz also recorded a class victory, piloting the No. 673 Holz Racing / Motoworks / Can-Am Commander 1000 X to an historic win in the inaugural Side-By-Side class event. Can-Am ATV racers Cody Miller, reigning 2010 NEATV-MX Champion, and John Natalie, 2011 AMA ATV MX Champion, joined Pelchat on the podium.

“It was another great year for Can-Am at the Montreal Supermotocross. To have a Can-Am DS450 podium sweep, and actually the top 4 finishing spots, was outstanding. I’m proud of Pelchat and happy for him to get his first Montreal win and to accomplish it on a DS 450,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “Holz knew he had his work cut out for him, but he did it and came out on top. To have the Motoworks / Can-Am Commander 1000 X take a very convincing win in the inaugural SSV event was icing on the cake, especially against a full gate of competitive side-by-sides. It was mission accomplished for Can-Am in Montreal and a great result for all BRP employees.”

Can-Am Racers Find Success at Mountain Ridge GNCC

Warnert Racing / Can-Am DS 450 ATV Pro racers Adam McGill and Chris Bithell finished second and third in the Pro class this past weekend at the Mountain Ridge GNCC in Somerset, Pa. In the Can-Am GNCC morning session, UXC Racing / Can-Am X-Team racer Michael Swift won the morning overall and the highly competitive 4×4 Open class aboard his Can-Am Outlander 800R X xc.

“McGill was close to earning his third win of the year, but he had a minor miscue on the final lap and had to settle for second in the Pro class. He gained some valuable ground on the Pro class points leader and that’s always good. To have both McGill and Bithell on the podium together, again, was great for team Warnert Racing / Can-Am,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “We continue to excel in the morning session, winning four classes and earning 10 of the top 20 morning finishing positions, highlighted by Michael Swift, who won both the a.m. overall and the 4×4 Open class.”

McGill, who led for much of the race, regained the lead on final lap as he passed another two miles before the finish line. However, in a slippery rock section, McGill said his handguard caught on a tree and swung him sideways. By the time he recovered, he had lost the lead. He finished less than two seconds behind the winner. McGill, with his second-place overall finish, now trails the Pro class points leader by 27 points with three rounds remaining in 2011. Bithell, who earned his second straight afternoon podium, ran inside the top five all day, but worked his way into third place on the final lap. He is currently in third place in the Pro class points race, 14 points behind McGill.

“In the first lap, there were about five of us that were really close and seemed like they were just kind of playing around so I went out there and took control and set the pace,” says McGill. “I was able to make up some valuable points, but I really want to win so I am going to go out there and give it everything I’ve got for the last three rounds.”

Borich Suffers Flat Tire at Mountain Ridge GNCC

Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Chris Borich made the best of a bad-luck situation on his Yoshimura-equipped Suzuki QuadRacer R450 at round 10 of the 2011 ATV Grand National Cross Country series in Somerset, Pa., this weekend at the Mountain Ridge GNCC.

Although reigning ATV XC1 Champion Borich was battling up front for most of the race, he suffered a spot of bad luck on the final lap. While maneuvering through the rockiest section of the course, he wound up with a punctured tire. Once he realized his predicament, Borich tried to salvage as many points as possible and finished fifth.

“We were running good,” says Borich. “Top three all day on the Rockstar Makita Suzuki QuadRacer. But at the start of the last lap, I looked down and one of the rear tires was flat and all the tire balls were gone. So after that, I was basically trying to hang on… I ran third for a while, but it was hard to go fast with the flat and I ended up dropping back to fifth.”

Despite the fifth-place finish, Borich still holds sway in the class. With just three rounds to go before the next event in Ohio, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider has a 22-point lead over second place in the overall championship points.

Yokley Racing ATV Report: Mountain Ridge GNCC

National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing Team rider Jarrod McClure finished 11th overall and ninth in the XC1 Pro class at the Mountain Ridge GNCC. There were 131 total entries including 12 XC1 Pro racers.

Summary

The Mountain Ridge GNCC is a scenic, high elevation ATV park near the Flight 93 Memorial in Somerset, Pa. The course consists of wide open high speed sections, mud holes and rocks of all sizes throughout. Rain earlier in the week made track conditions challenging, but near perfect.

Jarrod McClure had a great start and picked up the holeshot award. The first several miles were open trails and fields allowing the machine to bounce off the rev-limiter in top gear. McClure was fourth going into a long, extremely rough rock section at the seven-mile marker. Picking a good line and keeping your momentum was necessary in order to make it through safely. Unfortunately, his machine bottomed out on a big rock, and knocked his chain off. He jumped off and put it back on as quickly as possible. By now, all the pro riders had passed him while he worked to get back in the race.

Chase Snapp Wins TQRA Pro Class Championship

Can-Am X-Team pro ATV racer Chase Snapp won both the 2011 Texhoma Quad Racing Association Pro and Pro-Am class championships aboard the Can-Am DS 450 ATV.

With two convincing wins at the TQRA finale held at Valley MotorSports in Tuskahoma, Okla., Snapp held off defending TQRA Pro champion and fellow Can-Am X-Team racer Hunter Miller for the Pro and Pro-Am titles.

“Chase has had a great season aboard the Can-Am DS 450, winning two TQRA titles and finishing sixth overall in the AMA ATV MX series,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “In just his first full season as a professional, we’ve witnessed Chase grow into a fast, confident racer who has developed the skills to compete with anyone on the motocross track. I congratulate him and his family for their hard work, dedication and success.”

Can-Am Racers Earn Podiums in NEATV-MX and WORCS

Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 pro ATV racers remain in control of the Pro class points lead in the New England ATV Motocross series and World Off-Road Championship Series after this weekend’s races.

Josh Creamer went 1-2 in the Pro class motos to finish second and retain a 10-point lead in the NEATV-MX series. While Jeremie Warnia, after a fifth-place finish at Glen Helen in California, still leads the WORCS Pro class by one point over teammate Josh Frederick, who earned third place at round seven.

“We’re still in control of the Pro class points in both ATV racing series and feel very confident that Josh Creamer will give us his best effort yet at the NEATV-MX finale and provide the Motoworks / Can-Am team with another ATV Pro motocross title in 2011,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “I can’t say enough about the effort put in by both Warnia and Frederick at Glen Helen as they now sit 1-2 in the WORCS Pro class points chase. The WORCS Pro ATV championship will go down to the wire and we’re thankful our guys are sitting in those top two spots.”

NEATV-MX

The MX 101 course in Epping, NH, hosted round 11 of the NEATV-MX series. The short, narrow course made passing difficult, but Josh Creamer found his way around two riders in the first Pro class moto. After starting third, Creamer rallied to pass fellow DS 450 racer Cody Miller (BCS Performance / Can-Am) and then chase down the leader. After a lengthy battle, Creamer made his move and earned the checkers.

In moto two, Creamer again started third. For several laps, Creamer battled with Miller for the second-place spot. Once he finally passed Miller, he set his sights on the leader. However, Creamer ran out of time and had to settle for a second-place finish in moto two. His 1-2 finishes were good for second place overall. His 55-point total for both motos equaled that of the leader and enabled him to retain his 10-point Pro class cushion heading into the finale. The NEATV-MX finals are scheduled for October 9, at Hemonds MX in Minot, Maine.

“I won three out of four motos, but I didn’t win the one I really wanted to win so I am going to have to work a little harder at the final round if I want to take the championship,” says Josh Creamer. “I’m hoping all goes well at the final round and I will be able to give Can-Am a championship in return for everything they have done for me this season.”

Creamer was unstoppable in Pro-Am class action, as he not only won the holeshot of each moto, but also led from wire-to-wire to sweep the class. Miller followed up his third-place finish in the Pro class by finishing third in each Pro-Am moto and third overall.

ITP Brimstone SxS & ATV Roundup Report

There’s nothing like spending a Labor Day weekend with 5,000 of your closest friends! ITP did just that at the 2011 SxS & ATV Roundup, held for the third time at Brimstone Recreation near Huntsville, Tenn.

The desert-like conditions experienced this year (hot and dry) did little to dampen the fun and excitement this event always presents. Activities included guided trail rides for riders of all ability levels, a “Show and Shine,” a drive-in movie, a Kid Zone, and a concert by Tracy Lawrence. A vendor/demo area drew plenty of attention, and ITP was there. ITP also held a raffle drawing for a set of Mayhem tires.

Yokley Racing Report: WORCS Round 7

National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley finished second in the Side by Side 1 Class in Round 7 of the 2011 WORCS Series, while teammate Scott Kiger finished fifth in the same Class. Meanwhile, National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished sixth in the Pro ATV Class.

Summary – Side by Side Race

The National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing Team traveled to Glen Helen Raceway in Southern California after a brief summer break. Glen Helen hosts many different types of off-road races, including the AMA National Motocross Series. The course features a pro-style MX course with many steep hills and lots of natural elevation changes. The weather was sunny and 85 degrees.

William Yokley was in fourth place after the first turn, with teammate Scott Kiger right behind. The two National Guard Coastal Polaris Ranger RZR XP900s moved up to second and third going into the second lap. They stayed in those positions for the next several laps. Kiger dropped back to fifth place after damaging his front differential on one of the many rocks. Yokleyhad a nice battle with the lead machine, finally finishing in second place, and Kiger came home in fifth. The course was pretty rough, with many sandy washboard sections with choppy, square-edged whoops. Both machines ran strong and cool, thanks to their large capacity radiators and cooling systems built by Fluidyne Powersports.

Yokley increased his lead in the WORCS season points, and Scott is in fourth. The next side-by-side race is the GNCC in St. Clairsville, Ohio on Oct. 8.

Can-Am Racers Earn Podiums at Unadilla GNCC

Team Warnert Racing / Can-Am DS 450 racers Chris Bithell and Adam McGill finished second and third, respectively, in the XC1 class at the 2011 Can-Am Unadilla GNCC in New Berlin, NY.

In the morning ranks, several Can-Am racers finished on their class podium at Unadilla Valley Sports Center complex, including Bryan Buckhannon in the 4×4 Open class and Clifton Beasley in the U2 class. In fact, Beasley also secured the season championship aboard the Can-Am Renegade 800R X xc ATV by notching his ninth win in nine rounds of racing in 2011.

“I was pleased to see both Bithell and McGill reach the Pro class podium in New York. They both led the race at one time and had the speed to win, but unfortunately came up a little short on the rough, fast and short 7-mile course,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “I also have to congratulate Cliff Beasley on winning his 28th consecutive race, another U2 Class Championship and going 9-for-9 this year on his Renegade X xc.”

Yokley Racing ATV Report: Unadilla GNCC

National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing Team rider Jarrod McClure finished seventh overall and sixth in the XC1 Pro class at Unadilla GNCC in New Berlin, NY. There were 186 total entries including 12 XC1 Pro racers.

Yokley Racing Summary

The heavy rainstorms and flooding that hit the eastern U.S. were a big concern to everyone heading to Unadilla for Round 10 of the GNCC Series. Flooding in New York closed some of the major roads nearby, but the conditions were actually almost perfect at the historic Unadilla MX facility. The Racer Production crew shortened the course to bypass some very wet valley sections, but the remaining track was great, including parts of the AMA National Pro motocross course.

Jarrod McClure got a great start, going into the woods in third place. He passed one rider on the motocross course and finished the first lap in second. Jarrod had the lead on lap 2 for awhile until Chris Borich passed him. He ran up front with the top riders for the next several laps. He dropped back a few positions in the last several laps to finish sixth in the XC1 Pro class.

Terracross Makes Its Return at Haydays

Terracross, formally known as Quad Terrain Challenge, is making its return to the world of racing this weekend, Sept. 10-11, at the 2011 Haydays Extravaganza. Once again, riders are going to face gnarly rocks, rough and tough log sections, mud and the absolute chaos caused by all the riders on the track at once. In the past, only Utility ATVs have run Terracross but this event will have Side-by-Sides as well adding to the action-packed Terracross craziness.

Daryl Rath is no stranger to this sport and has been diligently working behind the scenes for two years helping the ESPN X Games Promoter bring it back, not only back but to debut it in front of 35,000-40,000 estimated spectators.

“Terracross was created for the ESPN Great Outdoors Games by Tes Sewell, it evolved into the professional sport of Quad Terrain which played for two seasons on ESPN. With the original name Terracross back and the help of Rath the large crowds at Haydays will see this thrilling action packed form of competition.” says Joe Duncan, another key person in bringing this event together.

Yamaha ATV Racing Revs Up for Final Stretch

Yamaha’s ATV Race Teams have been claiming podiums this season at the nation’s top racing series from East to West. With returning champions and strong challengers on blue, Yamaha riders have seen success in Grand National Cross Country (GNCC), QuadX and AMA ATV Motocross Championship racing and are poised to capture titles in motocross and cross country action.

“We have a great group of racers who are doing spectacular things on the tracks and trails aboard their YFZ450Rs and YFZ450Xs,” says Donnie Luce, Yamaha ATV/Off-Road racing coordinator. “While there are fewer factory programs this year, the competition is still extremely tough – our racers are showing their talents and stamina pushing harder and faster. Yamaha is deeply ingrained in ATV racing, and we’re excited to see how the rest of the 2011 season plays out.”

Here’s a look at Yamaha’s 2011 ATV team through mid-August:

Thomas Brown battled with some of the world’s top motocross racers in the AMA ATV Motocross Championship series finishing a personal best fourth place overall for the year. After a rough start, Brown rose in the ranks capturing three second place podium finishes.

“Thomas has risen through the AMA ATV ranks, and he’s proved he is a rider to be reckoned with in this series,” Luce said.

2011 GBC Motorsports Heartland Challenge Report

The 4th Annual Heartland Challenge presented by GBC Motorsports took Carlisle, Iowa by storm this year. Great weather and great track conditions made this year’s event a fun and exciting weekend full of racing for all in attendance.

Andy Kyner and his IATVHSS (Iowa ATV Hare Scramble Series) team did a fantastic job with all aspects of the event, receiving rave reviews from riders and spectators alike. The course itself offered up a variety of terrain, including tight technical sections with frequent elevation changes, long and fast straight-aways through the heartland’s farm fields, and motocross-style whoops and jumps. The “Heartland Challenge” section is of course the defining feature of this event, in which competitors must negotiate a variety of obstacles.

GBC Motorsports was out in full force for the event, with its full line of ATV and UTV products on display. GBC showcased its new Kanati truck tire throughout the weekend. There was an impressive roster on vendor’s row, including PIAA lighting, which provided an array of products to help with the nighttime portion of the event, as well as C&D ATV.

The first event of the weekend was Friday night’s UTV challenge. The four-hour endurance race saw Team Elias narrowly beat out Team Coastal/Yokely Racing, with Team Extreme rounding out the podium. The Open UTV class podium was comprised of Team Coastal/Yokely Racing, Team Extreme and Team Donkey. The 850 Mod class saw overall winners Team Elias on top, followed by Team Galloping Zebra and Team LM1. Team I Love Hooters, Team D&S Racing and Team A-Team were the top three finishers in the 850 limited class.

Proving once again that endurance racing is not just for adults, Saturday morning’s three-hour youth challenge gave teams of young riders the opportunity to compete on much of the same terrain as their older and more experienced counterparts. When the checkered flag flew it was Team Dirtworks taking the overall win, with Team NA in second and Team Extreme in third.

Later on Saturday, 54 teams finished their preparations and lined up for a Le Mans style start, in which riders dashed 20 yards before firing up their quads and heading out on the course. After 10 hours of racing, defending champions Team Ballance Racing Yamaha (Kiser, Fowler and Brown) once again claimed the $6,000 top prize, putting on an impressive display of riding in the process. Team Woodhead (Wolf, Ockerman and Henthorn) finished second overall for the second consecutive year while Team Sweet Home Alabama (Pickens, Gallagher and Cecco) rounded out the podium in third.

Motoworks / Can-Am Racers Win WORCS and NEATV-MX Pro Classes

Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 ATV racers Josh Creamer and Josh Frederick each won the Pro class in their respective series to inch closer to the overall points lead. Creamer, who competes in the New England ATV Motocross Series (NEATV-MX), went 1-2 in the Pro class at Englishtown, N.J. to stay within four points of the Pro class points leader. In Washougal, Wash., Frederick won his second race of the season in the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) to climb within five points of class leader, teammate Jeremie Warnia.

“I was very pleased with the efforts put forth by both Creamer and Frederick and seeing them each earn the top spot on their respective podiums to stay in the hunt for their Pro class titles,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “No matter the conditions, terrain, distance or series, the Can-Am DS 450 continues to outperform the competition.”

NEATV-MX, Round 9

Creamer won the Pro and Pro-Am classes on his DS 450 ATV, tallying 2-1 moto finishes in both classes at a gnarly Raceway Park in Englishtown. Creamer overcame the wet, single-line course to notch his second straight victory and fourth win of the season on the Can-Am ATV. Difficult passing conditions hampered Creamer’s first moto as he took second place. However, in moto two, Creamer started out in third place and quickly moved into second after just two turns. He then made a pass on the leader to take the lead and earn the overall victory. Creamer remains only four points behind the Pro class points leader with three rounds remaining on the NEATV-MX schedule.

“I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t win all four motos, but I’m still happy to get the overalls,” says Creamer. “Ryan Cox (Motoworks) came out to help me this weekend and it was nice to have a mechanic there to take some of the pressure off and let me focus on racing.”

Jagged X Wins Fifth Straight Vegas to Reno UTV Race

Best in the Desert’s Vegas to Reno race is the longest and toughest, off-road desert race in the U.S., and Polaris Ranger RZRs were out in full force. In the starting field of 14 for the 553-mile race, was the four-time defending champions, Jagged X in its No. 1919 Ranger RZR XP 900 and Polaris Regional Sales Manager, Matt Parks in his Holz Racing Ranger RZR 4 800.

When the dust settled, Jagged X would have their fifth consecutive Vegas to Reno win with Parks finishing second. With only five Side-by-Sides finishing, Ranger RZRs would sweep the podium with a Ranger RZR XP 900 also finishing third.

The Jagged X team dedicated most of its summer race break preparing and fine tuning the No. 1919 Ranger RZR XP 900 race car. The XP has performed well since its debut at the Silver State 300 in April, but the team has been working on small refinements and adjustments to make this machine the best it could be. Jagged X, with much help from Chad Riccio of CR Designs, stepped up its game on the support side of things with two completely equipped chase vehicles.

All this work combined with some great drivers and co-drivers paid off when the flag dropped early Friday morning. The No. 1919 driven By Brandon Schueler with Mike West in the navigation seat took no time to take their seventh starting spot to the front of the pack. By Pit 4, they found themselves chasing the always-consistent Polaris Ranger RZR 4 of Matt Parks, watching for any chance to get out front for some fresh air. The two Ranger RZRs swapped the lead several times in the first 350 miles with both teams being plagued by minor problems. With an elapsed time of 13 hours, 27 minutes and 42 seconds the Jagged X Ranger RZR XP 900 finished 52nd overall out of 99 car and truck finishers proving just how tough Polaris off-road vehicles are. The win moves Brandon Schueler into the points lead for the 2011 BITD championship series with two races left to go.

Can-Am Wins the 2011 AMA ATVMX Manufacturer's Cup

The AMA ATV Motocross Championship Series has announced that Can-Am will be the recipient of the 2011 Manufacturer’s Cup, edging out Honda by less than forty points.

Each year, AMA Pro Racing awards the manufacturer that accumulates the most points in the AMA Pro class throughout the course of a season with the Manufacturer’s Cup. The series points are configured race-to-race, based on each manufacturer’s best overall finisher. Can-Am finished out the season with seven of the eleven victories, aided by Can-Am riders John Natalie, Chad Wienen and Chase Snapp.

“On behalf of BRP and Can-Am we are extremely proud of our racers and teams that contributed to winning this year’s Manufacturer’s Cup championship aboard the DS450. The entire Can-Am / Motorworks team has worked extremely hard, investing countless hours and making numerous sacrifices to help us achieve our common goal,” says Can-Am Race Manager, Jimmie O’Dell. “Our team riders John Natalie and Chad Wienen were true inspirations this season by both overcoming adversity and have also taken training and preparation to another level. I also want to thank Can-Am X-Team rookie pro Chase Snapp and his team as they worked extremely hard this season and have contributed to Can-Am winning this manufacturer’s cup title.”

Creamer Wins Pro, Pro-Am Classes at NEATV-MX Round 8

Motoworks / Can-Am ATV racer Josh Creamer overcame the excessively muddy conditions at MX 207 to win the Pro class at round eight of the New England ATV Motocross Series in Lyman, Maine. Creamer also won the Pro-Am class aboard his Can-Am DS 450 ATV. Series points leader, Dustin Wimmer finished second to Creamer in both classes. BCS Performance / Can-Am DS 450 racer Cody Miller earned two podiums as well, taking third overall in each class.

“With his outstanding weekend performance, Creamer has dramatically closed up the Pro class points championship race and sits only four points behind the leader with four rounds of racing remaining,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “He continues to impress on the DS 450 and his performance in the slick, muddy track was incredible.”

Creamer jumped out to an early lead in moto one, grabbing the holeshot, and held off another racer for the win. Moto two was even more challenging as Creamer, who took another holeshot, dropped back to second place during the early part of the race before making a pass and rallying for the win. His 1-1 finish gave him a 10-point cushion over second place at round eight. With his third overall victory, he now trails the Wimmer by just four points heading into round nine, which is to be held Aug. 21 at Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.

“I had a good day even with all the mud,” says Creamer. “I knew a good start was needed, so I just did my best to get out front and stay there. I’m looking forward to the next round at E-Town. Hopefully we’ll get a little better weather for that one.”

Can-Am DS 450 Finish on Podium in U.S. and Canada
Can-Am pro racers had a successful weekend racing their DS 450 ATVs in both the United States and Canada. Three racers earned a total of six pro-level podiums competing in the New England ATV Motocross (NEATV-MX) series and the Canadian Motosport Racing Club (CMRC) series.

“Can-Am pro racers continue to put in impressive rides and earn podiums aboard the highly competitive DS 450 ATV,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “No matter the country or the series, the DS 450 has proven to be a competent and capable machine for ATV motocross.”

In the NEATV-MX series, Motoworks / Can-Am racer Josh Creamer won the first moto in both the Pro and Pro-Am classes, but finished in the runner-up spot in moto two of each class. His 1-2 moto scores in both classes earned him second overall in each class. However, he remains just 14 points behind the Pro class points leader heading into round eight August 7, in Lyman, Maine.

Creamer Wins Pro and Pro-Am Classes at NEATV-MX Round Six

Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 racer Josh Creamer won both the Pro and Pro-Am classes at round six of the New England ATV Motocross Series in Minot, Maine. BCS Performance / Can-Am DS 450 racer Cody Miller joined Creamer on both podiums, finishing third in both classes.

“Josh continues to amaze us on how talented of a rider he actually is. This season he’s has adapted very quickly to the Can-Am DS 450 and continues to get faster each race,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “This past weekend Josh was in championship form and rode hard on his way to winning all four motos.”

Creamer had a challenging first moto after a battle with the current Pro-class points leader. After grabbing the holeshot in moto one, Creamer lost the lead only to regain it again as the leader made a mistake. Then in the second Pro moto, Creamer used the power from his Motoworks-prepped DS 450 to grab another holeshot and lead wire-to-wire for the victory. The two-moto sweep moved Creamer to within 14 points of the Pro class leader.

Yokley Racing ATV Report: John Penton GNCC

National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing Team rider Jarrod McClure finished fifth Overall and fifth in the XC1 Pro class today. There were 164 total entries including 14 XC1 Pro racers. Yokley Racing Youth ATV Team rider Kalab Hagan finished second in the 90 Open (8-11) class. There were 82 total entries including 13 in his class

Summary – XC1 Pro ATV

The track at Millfield can be really muddy, or really dusty. This weekend’s race was run in almost perfect conditions after receiving some rain recently; it was sunny and the temperature in the 80’s. There was very little dust, and there were some muddy hillclimbs and creek crossings. The course included a pro-style motocross track as well as tight woods sections.

Jarrod McClure got off the line well, but someone ran over his rear tire in the first turn, almost flipping him over. He completed lap 1 in sixth position, and was being smart with his line selections in the muddy areas. He moved into fifth on lap 2, and maintained that position to the finish. Many of the pro riders were getting stuck, but McClure said he never did. He attributed that to the new Kenda tires and Tireballs, and was really stoked about the traction they provided.

ATV MX Racer Wienen Suffers Broken Back

Motoworks / Can-Am pro ATV racer and current AMA ATV MX Championship series Pro-class points leader Chad Wienen crashed last week while training at his practice track in Illinois suffering a season-ending injury to his back. Medical crews were on the scene quickly and he was transported to an area hospital. At the hospital, it was discovered Wienen broke two vertebrae in the middle of his back, but he suffered no major spinal cord injury and has feeling in his extremities.

Wienen underwent surgery on Saturday to stabilize his back. The surgery to fuse several vertebrae in his back was successful and he is conscious and talking; he may be moved out of recovery today. He is anxious to get back on his feet and will start rehabbing as soon as he gets approval from the doctors.

“Chad is a hard-working and dedicated racer and I am sure he will tackle his recovery from this injury just like he tackled his training: with 100-percent commitment,” says Jimmie O’Dell, Race Manager, Can-Am. “I was glad to hear the surgery was successful and Chad is in good spirits and ready to move on and start recovering. He is in the thoughts and prayers of everyone here at BRP.”

ITP Riders Find Success at Snowshoe GNCC

For the second time this year, ITP-mounted Adam McGill and Chris Bithell finished 1-2 in a Grand National Cross Country Series event. The Foremost Insurance/Warnert Can-Am teammates topped the Snowshoe GNCC, round eight of the 2011 series at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, some 4,800 feet high in the hills of West Virginia.

It was a big payday for McGill, as the Snowshoe GNCC rewards the winner an eye-popping $5,000 (the largest purse on the circuit). The win also moved McGill into close contention for the series championship with five events remaining on the 2011 schedule. Bithell holds third in the XC1 Pro class standings.

The key moment in the wet and sloppy race came on the last lap when McGill turned risk into reward by blasting directly through one of the many challenging mudholes while leader Bithell chose a more conservative route. McGill kept his momentum from there and finished the four-lap, two-hour race just 14 seconds ahead of Bithell. Both riders chose ITP’s Holeshot GNCC tires for the front of their Can-Am DS 450s, and ITP’s QuadCross XC tires for the rear.

Yokley Racing ATV Report: Snowshoe GNCC

National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing Team rider Jarrod McClure finished fifth Overall and fourth in the XC1 Pro class. There were 160 total entries including 15 XC1 Pro racers. Yokley Racing Youth Motorcycle Team rider Kaleb Hagan finished sixth in the 65 (10-11) class, and also competed in the Youth ATV 90 Open (8-11) class, finishing in second place. There were 119 total Youth motorcycle entries including 23 65 (10-11) racers, and 95 total Youth ATV entries including 17 90 Open (8-11) racers.

Summary – XC1 Pro ATV

The Snowshoe GNCC is considered the toughest race on the schedule, and is brutal on riders and machines. The course runs loops on two sides of Snowshoe Mountain and goes right through the picturesque ski resort. This event is very much like the historic Blackwater 100, where the GNCC had its beginnings. Steep hills, deep mud holes and tons of rocks makes this race a huge accomplishment just to finish.

National Guard Coastal rider Jarrod McClure has had some bad racing luck the past few races, but he was focused and prepared for a strong run. The grand prix style start features five ATVs per row, starting at five-second intervals. There is always a lot of bumping and banging as the machines funnel out of the main street area into the woods. Jarrod started on row 2, and was seventh as they headed down the mountain. While jockeying for position on lap 1, he blew through a turn and got hung up on a tree. This put him back to 10th place as they began lap 2.

Jarrod started picking off riders each lap, and by the end of the 4 lap race, he had worked his way to fourth place in the XC1 pro class. His machine was fast and reliable. Mark Baldwin, owner of Baldwin Motorsports, had built Jarrod a new race motor with some trick cylinder head modifications. His bike was ripping up the many long uphill sections! His Kenda tires were hooking up great, and like always, Tireballs were an absolute necessity.

Jarrod will now prepare for next weekend’s AMA National Hare Scrambles race in New York. The next GNCC race is the John Penton in Millfield Ohio on July 9.
