A 195-horsepower desert eating Sport Side-by-Side

For model year 2020, the Can-Am managed to squeeze even more muscle out of its turbocharged Rotax ACE 900 engine and build a new line of super-sport Maverick Side-by-Side models. We wanted to take a closer look at the new Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR.

What’s New

That name probably sounds really familiar to Can-Am Maverick owners, but it’s the ‘RR’ that deserves a closer look. For 2020, all the Turbo RR models feature an updated engine that produces a claimed 195 horsepower. That’s a remarkable 23 ponies more than the Turbo R models, which were already at the top of their class in power. Add a peak torque of 135 lb-ft and this should be neck snapping, grin-inducing power like the industry has never seen before.

So how did the Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR get its extra juice? According to Can-Am, it was a combination of a bigger turbo and intercooler, along with a less restrictive airbox to help increase airflow.

But Wait…There’s More!

Along with the power boost, the Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR also benefits from a re-calibrated CVT to make better use of the power upgrade and to improve belt longevity.

As an added bonus, the X rs Turbo RR boasts new 14-inch cast-aluminum beadlock wheels. According to Can-Am, “[t]he mechanical fastening beadlock system makes it nearly impossible for the tire bead to break loose from the wheel during heavy acceleration or cornering.”

Wrapped around the new wheels are 30-inch Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires that have an updated diameter to improve handling. The front diameter is now 9.0 inches and the rear diameter is 11.0 inches. Can-Am says this helps to reduce front-end kick back and enhance traction in the rear.

You will be able to drive over even larger rocks and trail obstacles thanks to 16 inches of ground clearance – a one-inch gain over the single ‘R’ model.

A new 7.6-inch digital display is a standard feature on the RR model. This is a larger and display that is designed to be easier for the driver to read. This package includes an interactive keypad for selecting different driving modes.

Finally, the Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR comes dressed in new Hyper Silver, Intense Blue & Manta Green, though Painted Gold, Can-Am Red & Hyper Silver and Triple Black are also available.

More Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR Features

Beyond the changes mentioned above, this machine comes loaded with the X rs features we’ve been familiar with. This includes fully adjustable Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 piggyback shocks with bypass and dual-speed compression and rebound up front and Fox 3.0 Podium RC2 shocks with remote reservoirs and bypass in the rear.

Up front and the Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR features a double tubular A-arm and sway bar, which controls 22 inches of travel.

Out back, you’ll find Can-Am’s unique four-link TTX suspension, which has been re-calibrated for the 2020 model year. This system uses a trailing arm and three links to control wheel toe over the suspension’s absurd 24 inches of travel.

Another key feature for X rs Turbo RR is its electronically controlled front lockable differential system with Smart-Lok technology. According to Can-Am, this system “ensures maximum traction and enhanced slow-speed maneuverability especially in challenging terrain.”

The Smart-Lok system, which was developed with TEAM Industries, allows on-the-fly adjustments, meaning the differential can lock and unlock on the fly at any speed.

“The brain controlling this industry leading technology is the Front Differential Module, gathering input from six key vehicle parameters,” Can-Am says in a release. “It analyzes front wheel speed from both sides, steering angle, accelerator pedal, gear position, engine torque and vehicle speed. Depending on the readings and the Smart-Lok setting, the actuator will instantaneously initiate the locking of the front differential. The result is simple steering output (same as being fully open), allowing the driver to accurately conquer varying obstacles while maintaining momentum.”

There are four different drive modes available for the driver to select: 2×4 / 4×4 fully locked / 4×4 TRAIL ACTIV and 4×4 TRAIL.

Standard safety features on the Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo RR include integrated front bumper, quarter-doors, high-molecular weight polyethylene skid plate, full roof, and four-point harnesses with shoulder pads.
