Yamaha To Go Electric?

With the push toward electric vehicles, and with electric ATVs slowly but surely showing up on dealership floors, it makes sense for some of the bigger manufacturers to be coming out with electric machines. Enter Yamaha.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office recently published three patent applications from Yamaha Motor Corp. related to an all-new electric ATV. The three patents are all very similar and have a lot of overlap, so they appear to be for the same, of very similar model concepts. The main differences are mostly concerning how the battery and motor are packaged in the chassis. Our guess is that this is for exploring ways to improve the ease of assembly and maintenance, and maximizing space to squeeze in a larger battery.

From the looks of the sketches posted on the published applications, our guess is that this is initially for a youth model. This makes sense as youth models are the low-hanging fruit of the electric ATV world. But still, the diagram from the application looks like a YFZ or Raptor. Can you imagine an all-electric sport ATV? How awesome would THAT be?

So far, this is just the patent application, so they are likely still in the testing phase. However, this does likely mean that we will see an All-electric Yamaha ATV sooner rather than later. How do you feel about this? What would you like to see in an electric ATV?
