Summary – Side by Side

William Yokley Mountaineer Run GNCC

The GNCC Series moved on to the Mountaineer Run in West Virginia for Round 3 for the Side by Side machines. This race is new for the GNCC Series in 2012 and the competitors did not know exactly what to expect. The track featured a very technical 4.6 mile course with lots of rocky sections and tight woods. Taking care of your machine in the rocks would be important today.

The start flag dropped and after the first few turns, Kiger had the lead with Yokley in third. Later in the lap, Kiger slid wide in a turn and had to back up, dropping him back to third place. The course had tight woods trails and a few open areas, and about one half of the track was on totally newly cut trails. Both Yokley and Kiger had good pace and other than a few bottlenecks, they were on pace for good finishes.

On the last lap, Yokley had a mechanical issue with his four wheel drive system. The front wheels would not engage properly, and he only had traction with his rears. He lost quite a bit of time negotiating the slick rocks, mudholes and hillclimbs. Kiger passed Yokley and finished second, while Yokley limped home in third place.

It was a very good day for the team, with both machines on the podium. Congratulations to the March Westin Team for the overall win. The next race for the Side by Sides is the John Penton in Millfield, Ohio on July 7.

Summary – ATV

The Mountaineer Run is the third new venue this year for the GNCC Series. The track was technical featuring lots of rocks, tight woods, hills and mud holes. The weather was hot and muggy with temps in the 90’s.

Jarrod got a good start at the drop of the green flag, and headed into the woods in 4th place. He ran with the lead pack heading into lap 2. His race was steady and pretty uneventful, with the ATV working well. A concern was the heat index and how to deal with it. Fortunately, Jarrod is in great shape due to Moto Pro Training, and he had no problems.

On the 4th and final lap, he lost a position and finished up in 6th place. Overall, it was a good day for Jarrod and the team. Jarrod now sits 7th in season points.

The National Guard / Coastal / Bowers Motorcycle Supplies / Yokley ATV Team will now prepare for the next GNCC race in Snowshoe, West Virginia on June 23. The Snowshoe is one of the toughest GNCCs on the schedule, and a crowd favorite at the famed Snowshoe Ski Resort. We’ll see you there!
