Fractured back forces Stewart to miss Daytona 500

According to a story from the Associated Press, an all-terrain vehicle accident sent multi-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart to the hospital with a fractured back.

The accident reportedly occurred when Stewart was riding this past Sunday on the west coast. Stewart’s teams said he suffered a “burst fracture of the L1 vertebra” in the crash. He has surgery on Wednesday.

While the report says Stewart was riding an all-terrain vehicle when he was hurt, that doesn’t tell us a whole lot. The mainstream media will use “all-terrain vehicle” to describe anything from a traditional ATV to a dune buggy, sand rail or rock crawler.

Stewart will miss the season-opening Daytona 500. It is unknown when he will return to racing..
