Definitely effective, but not necessarily recommended
Planning for a flat tire when riding on exceptionally rocky terrain is always a good idea. However, seating the bead on a tire is a pretty tough fix with just the standard tools most people have available on the trail. These guys were resourceful enough to find a solution that put them back on the trail.
