Volcon Inc., an all-electric, off-road powersports company, recently announced that it will deliver five Stag UTV vehicles to the U.S. Army. The order comes under the management of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) and is expected to be fulfilled by late 2023.

These vehicles, a modified commercial version of the Stag, will feature a 54kWh electric powertrain. The order was placed through the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Tailored Logistics Support Program (TLSP), managed by Noble. The vehicles will be utilized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for disaster and emergency response missions in accordance with the National Response Framework (NRF).

The ERDC-CERL also intends to introduce the Stag to soldiers at training sites and evaluate potential military applications.

According to Richard Tannery, Vice President of Global Defense and Government Programs at Volcon, the order goes beyond fleet electrification requirements. He states, "These mandates provide good introductions to government decision makers regarding the technology, and many are realizing that EV performance speaks for itself. The conversation is shifting to one of tactical advantage, over sustainability.”

Volcon has been garnering interest from various defense and government entities due to its ability to rapidly prototype and leverage strategic collaborations. This comes as these entities need to meet the aggressive timelines for fleet electrification set by the US Army’s 2022 Climate Strategy, and the Biden administration’s 2021 Federal Sustainability Plan.

Tannery continued, "We can’t force technology into the battlefield to the disadvantage of the warfighter just because it feels good. Instead, we have to apply the technology to the correct tactical application. That’s how you deploy new technology, today.”
