Borich Secures Title With Win at Ironman GNCC
Third straight championship for Borich

The Ironman GNCC is historically known for its spectator-friendly obstacles and festive aura, usually serving as the final round of racing; but due to a previous rainout, the Ironman provided a penultimate round of exciting racing action in all classes, the finale taking place at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch November 4-6. Aside from racing action, there were a variety of special events taking place at the festive Ironman event and there’s no doubt the Crawfordsville, Ind. locals witnessed a day of ATV racing they will never forget.

Chris Borich wrapped up the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series championship with one round remaining on the schedule after taking an exciting and hard-fought victory at the prestigious Amsoil Ironman GNCC – marking his third consecutive title.

Borich Rallies to Win ITP Powerline Park GNCC
Last-lap pass gives Suzuki pilot seventh win of season

Chris Borich made a thrilling, last-lap pass on Brian Wolf to take an exciting, come-from-behind victory at the ITP Powerline Park GNCC, round 12 of the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

The win marked the seventh time this year the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider has graced the top step of the podium and it increased his already hefty lead in the series standings to a massive 36 points over Adam McGill with two rounds remaining on the schedule.

Dustin Canipe got the ball rolling by grabbing the holeshot at the start of the two-hour race, and by doing so, the Honda rider claimed the $250 Motosport.com Holeshot Award. It wasn’t long, however, before Wolf put his GT Thunder-backed Honda into the lead, eventually stretching his advantage to 40 seconds by the end of the opening lap.

Wolf Wins Mountain Ridge GNCC
Points leader Borich finishes fifth

Brian Wolf took advantage of a late race mistake by Adam McGill to take a thrilling win at the VP Racing Fuels Mountain Ridge GNCC in Somerset, Pennsylvania – round 11 of the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series.

For most of the two-hour race, no less than five riders were in contention for the overall victory. However, it was McGill who led the most laps, taking the early lead after making first-lap passes on Wolf and $250 Motosport.com Holeshot Award winner Taylor Kiser. McGill’s Foremost Insurance/Warnert Racing Can-Am teammate Chris Bithell was among the front-runners, along with Kiser on the Ballance Racing Yamaha, Wolf on a GT Thunder-backed Honda and series points leader Chris Borich on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki, as McGill led the pack through one of the toughest courses of the year.

Fowler Wins Can-Am Unadilla GNCC
Borich tops XC1 class and extends points lead

Chris Borich came out on top of a hard-fought battle with Chris Bithell and Adam McGill to top the XC1 division at this year’s Can-Am Unadilla GNCC in New Berlin, New York. However, it was XC2 rider Walker Fowler who claimed the overall victory, edging Borich on adjusted time by just over six seconds at the end of the two-hour race.

After getting off to a mid-pack start Borich moved into the lead midway into the race, the Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider hooking up with GT Thunder-backed Brian Wolf at the front as the two riders pulled away from the rest of the pack. However, due to the relatively short length of the course, it wasn’t long before the two front-runners ran into lappers, allowing Foremost Insurance/Warnert Racing Can-Am teammates Bithell and McGill to catch up. For the next few laps, the four front-runners took turns leading the race.

Natalie Captures 2011 AMA ATVMX Championship
Rookie Hetrick sweeps motos in season finale

This year’s AMA ATV Motocross Championship Series presented by DWT has been an array of ups, downs, career-firsts and even season enders; it’s been chalked full of excitement as well as disappointment as the fastest ATV racers in the nation have put everything on the line to compete for the coveted AMA Pro Racing ATV Motocross Championship title. However, amidst all the hard work and emotion, only two riders were actually in contention this weekend to take home the championship title, and those riders were Motoworks Can-Am‘s John Natalie and Baldwin Motorsports PEP Racing’s Josh Upperman – who came into the final round of racing at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch only ten points apart.

Rewinding back to June, Motoworks Can-Am’s Chad Wienen had swept four of the first seven rounds of racing – giving himself a padded points lead heading into the second half of the schedule until a season-ending practice crash put a halt to his championship sights in 2011. Like the true champion that he is though, Wienen attended this weekend’s season-finale race to support his Can-Am teammate as well as his friends and fellow racers. To keep his mind in the game, Chad even co-announced both pro motos alongside ATVMX announcer Rodney Tomblin, adding his on-track experience and expertise for the fans at Loretta Lynn’s.

Rookie Hetrick Earns First Win at Unadilla ATVMX
Upperman closes the points gap on Natalie

It was only a matter of time before this year’s determined rookies topped the podium amongst a deep field of veterans in the 2011 AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series presented by DWT. Pro class rookie Chase Snapp took his first-ever moto win two weeks ago in Ohio, while Makson Construction JB Racing’s Joel Hetrick swept Saturday’s Unadilla event, giving the rookie a career-best overall win.

Sunny skies and warm temperatures graced the Unadilla Valley Sports Center for round nine of the eleven-stop circuit. The habitually rough Unadilla racetrack was sleek and fast, an additional variable to the already exciting championship points battle. The points margin is closer than it’s ever been this season and with only two rounds remaining on the 2011 schedule, every moto counts.

Borich Back on Top at John Penton GNCC
Fifth win of season for Suzuki pilot

After suffering a disappointing mechanical failure at the previous round in West Virginia, Chris Borich got back on top of the podium with a spectacular win at the Wiseco John Penton GNCC, round nine of the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series in Millfield, Ohio.

Borich battled race-long with Ballance Racing Yamaha‘s Taylor Kiser, Foremost Insurance/Warnert Racing Can-Am’s Chris Bithell and GT Thunder-backed Brian Wolf before putting his Rockstar Makita Suzuki into the lead on the final lap to claim his fifth victory of the season and extend his lead in the series standings to an impressive 27 points heading into the summer break.

“That race at Snowshoe was kind of a bummer, it was just a freak deal and I thought we had at least a top two,” says Borich. “You just can’t control things like that sometimes, but it’s good to come back strong here and get the win.”

Upperman Wins Sunday Creek ATVMX National
Points leader Natalie struggles to 10th place finish

There was a noticeable absence at this weekend’s Suzuki Summer ATV National at Sunday Creek Raceway as Motoworks Can-Am‘s Chad Wienen missed his first race of this season after undergoing surgery just last week. Although Wienen will not be racing again this season, the ATV Motocross family will continue to follow and support Wienen in his recovery efforts.

Round 8 of the AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series presented by DWT took over the grounds of Sunday Creek Raceway in Millfield, Ohio, for the first time ever in the history of the series. A small rain took place in the early afternoon, creating an interesting dynamic for the first set of motos, but as soon as the rain stopped and the sun came out, it was a perfect day for ATV racing.

Motoworks Can-Am’s Jeremie Warnia was the fastest qualifier after taking advantage of the dry track conditions during the morning practice sessions.

“The track was awesome for practice, I prefer when it’s dry definitely. My Can-Am was running really good and I just found smooth lines out there,” says Warnia.

McGill Tops Field at Grueling Snowshoe GNCC
Can-Am pilot closes in on points lead

Adam McGill pocketed a cool $5,000 and moved within striking distance of the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series points lead by taking a spectacular win at the Motosport.com Snowshoe GNCC, round eight of the series at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Snowshoe, WV.

With the win, his second of the year, McGill moved to within seven points of series points leader Chris Borich, who finished a disappointing 12th after mud clogged his radiator and caused the engine on his Rockstar Makita Suzuki to overheat.

McGill’s Foremost Insurance/Warnert Racing Can-Am teammate Chris Bithell finished second after leading much of the race, while FRE Racing KTM’s Bryan Cook claimed his first podium finish of the year with a third.

Creamer Tops NEATV-MX Pro Class
First win of season for Motoworks/Can-Am pilot

Motoworks / Can-Am racer Josh Creamer earned his first ATV Pro-class overall aboard the Can-Am DS 450 at round four of the New England ATV Motocross Series held this past weekend at Capeway Rovers Motocross Park in Carver, Mass. Creamer, who recorded a 2-1 moto finish on the weekend, was joined on the podium by BCS Performance / Can-Am rider Cody Miller.

“Josh put in a pair of excellent rides this weekend and earned his first Pro-class overall for team Motoworks / Can-Am,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager, Can-Am. “This was a well-deserved victory for Josh and Can-Am, as we remain in the chase for another professional ATV motocross title. Both Josh and Cody had impressive moto performances aboard their Can-Am DS 450 machines, once again showcasing the machine’s elite capabilities.”

Despite heavy rain, muddy conditions and nagging injuries, Creamer was in championship form at round four of the NEATV-MX Series. The first Pro-class moto began with Miller edging Creamer for the holeshot. The two Can-Am-mounted racers put in a great battle throughout the moto, but slick, muddy conditions created minimal passing opportunities and the two riders finished the race how they started it. The moto victory was the first in 2011 for Miller, who is the reigning NEATV-MX Pro champion.

Motoworks/Can-Am Cruises to Victory in La Tuque Endurance Race
Three-man team dominates field in 12-hour race

The Team Motoworks / Can-Am DS 450 piloted by Josh Frederick, Jeremie Warnia and Dillon Zimmerman took first overall in what is classified as one of the toughest off-road endurance races in North America. The team did not just win, it dominated, when the checkered flag flew, the Motoworks team had an advantage of 10 laps on the rest of the 36-ATV field.

“To win a race like this by 10 laps really shows how prepared the Motoworks team and riders was for the race,” says Jimmie O’Dell, race manager for Can-Am. “Everyone on the team from the riders to the mechanics focused on doing everything to ensure a win at the race, and the DS 450 delivered for them.”

“The track was a lot rougher than I expected, but our Can-Am worked so good in the rough that it wasn’t an issue. Everyone was really nice there, the event was very well organized and we had a very good experience,” says Frederick. “This race was a lot like a WORCS race, so we decided to run a set-up that we knew. The Motoworks WORCS set-up is proven and it worked out really well, especially because we won.”

The win is the first La Tuque victory for the Can-Am DS 450, and the first for the Motoworks / Can-Am team. This is not the first time BRP has been victorious in the race, however. In 2002 a team piloting a DS 650 in the inaugural event took the victory.

This is the 10th anniversary of the race which takes place annually in La Tuque, Québec, which is a three-and-a-half hour drive northeast from Montréal. The race consists of three four-hour sessions (two in daylight and one in darkness) where teams try to complete as many laps of the course as possible in each session. When a session ends, the race ATVs are impounded and cannot be worked on until the start of the next session. After 12 hours of racing, the team with the most laps completed wins.

Wienen and Natalie split moto wins

Warm temperatures and sunny blue skies surrounded round 7 of the AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series presented by DWT, as the series headed to Spring Creek MX in Millville, Minn. this weekend. Challenging track conditions made for an exciting day of racing as the top ATV racers in the country battled for the overall win.

Joel Hetrick shot off the start to grab the SSiDecals.com Holeshot Award in moto one, barely edging out Jannsen Motorsports rider Nick DeNoble. Motoworks Can-Am pilot Chad Wienen, the fastest qualifier of the day, got a mid-pack start, forcing him to work his way through the pack early on. Hetrick held John Natalie off for about five laps until the rookie appeared to get a little winded. Natalie took over the lead and for the remainder of the race focused on holding his teammate Wienen off. Wienen had Millville’s famous “whoop monster” whoop section down, gaining time each lap.

Ranger RZRs Finish 1-2 at Blue Water Grand Prix
RZR 4 and RZR XP 900 finish on top of the podium

Polaris Ranger RZRs took another first and second, at Best in the Desert’s Blue Water Gran Prix this past weekend, in Parker, Ariz.

Racers were met with very warm conditions and with only a two-week turnaround between races, were challenged with a very tight, rough and technical course. In the end, Polaris Regional Sales Manager Matt Parks and co-driver Jason Spiess in Parks Racing Ranger RZR 4 800 took the checkered flag in two hours and six minutes.

“We got a good start and had a clean run today,” says Parks. “The course was super rough after several pro and amateur motorcycle and ATV races earlier in the day, but my Ranger RZR 4 800 was fast and handled really well in these tight, technical conditions.”

The new No. 1919 Ranger RZR XP 900 of Jagged X left the starting line a little behind what they had hoped coming into the first narrow hairpin, in the fifth position. Before Brandon Schueler made one complete 11 mile lap, he found his way into the clean air up front and by Lap Three, had developed a lead. In the middle of Lap 4, the car lost a swaybar link which caused some collateral damage and caused the car to quit running. Schueler and co-driver Landon Kubrick with some quick diagnostics had the No. 1919 back up and running in just a few minutes but not before the other front runners were able to get past. With just over two laps to go the team was able to make up enough ground to get past all except the No. 1932 Polaris Ranger RZR 4 of Matt Parks for a second place finish in the Pro UTV class.

“This is shaping up to be a super tight race for points this year with both Polaris cars on the podium at every race so far,” says Bill Schueler of Jagged X.

The next Best in the Desert race is the longest off-road race in the U.S. in TSCO Vegas to Reno, August 18-20.

Parks is sponsored by Holz Racing Products, Walker Evans wheels and shocks, Maxxis Tires, Tire Balls, Kroyer racing engines, Muzzy, Pure Polaris Lubricants, Utendorfer graphics, D.W.O. race prep, UTV Underground and Valley Cycle in Bakersfield, Calif.

Gosport, Ind. is a new event on the GNCC schedule this year, and the team was looking for another strong showing. The course featured tight woods sections, steep hills and high speed open fields. The weather forecast called for some showers in the afternoon, but throughout the morning and early afternoon, it was sunny and warm. Around 2:30 PM, the skies turned dark, the temperature dropped and the rain let loose. It rained so hard that the Racer Production team had to shorten the afternoon Pro ATV race. It continued to rain and there was discussion as to whether they would even run the 4:30 pm Side by Side race. The problem was high water in the creeks and low areas, and the open field sections were a muddy quagmire. It was awful conditions!

South Carolina Governor Signs ATV Safety Legislation
Law includes many provisions from SVIA's model legislation

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has signed into law all-terrain vehicle safety legislation advocated by the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America (SVIA). H 3562, the All-Terrain Vehicle Safety Act, known as ‘Chandler’s Law,’ will take effect July 1, 2011.

SVIA has been working for many years in South Carolina to advocate the passage of comprehensive ATV safety legislation. Earlier this year, SVIA staff testified in support of the pending legislation at a Senate committee hearing.

“We’re extremely pleased the South Carolina legislature and the governor took this positive step to regulate the use of ATVs, particularly for young operators,” says SVIA Senior Vice President of Government Relations Kathy Van Kleeck. “We are especially appreciative of the efforts of the sponsors of the legislation, Representative Ott and Senator Hutto, for their steadfast support of ATV safety and their perseverance in steering the measure through the legislative process.

“We also would like to recognize Chandler’s parents who were tireless advocates for ATV safety legislation. Chandler’s Law is named for a 16-year old who was fatally injured while riding an ATV.”

According to the SVIA, research has shown that the vast majority of ATV crashes result from inappropriate use of the product. Ninety-two percent of ATV-related fatalities involve behaviors the industry warns against in its rider education programs, in all literature and on vehicle labels. These behaviors include riding inappropriately sized ATVs, operating on paved roads, operating without proper safety gear, and operating under the influence of alcohol. To address these “warned against behaviors” and other important ATV safety measures, SVIA has developed Model State ATV Legislation that has served as the basis for many existing state ATV safety laws.

Prior to passage of H 3562, South Carolina was one of only five states that had no laws relating to ATVs. Many bills have been introduced in South Carolina over the past decade, and in both 2006 and 2007 the legislature passed ATV safety bills, only to have them vetoed by then-Governor Mark Sanford.

South Carolina’s new ATV safety law includes many of the key provisions contained in SVIA’s Model Legislation, namely rider training, helmet and eye protection and parental supervision requirements for youth riders, and prohibitions on children riding adult-size ATVs and on ATV operation while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Provisions of the new law include:
*
Prohibits a parent or legal guardian knowingly permitting: 1) a child under age 6 to operate an ATV; 2) a child without a driver’s license and under age 16 to carry a passenger while operating an ATV; 3) a child under age 16 to operate an ATV in violation of the Age Restriction Warning Label affixed by the manufacturer.

* Requires ATV operators under age 16 to possess a safety certificate indicating successful completion of a ‘hands-on’ all-terrain vehicle safety course approved by the ATV Safety Institute (ASI).

* Requires every ATV operator and passenger 15 years of age or younger to wear eye protection and a DOT-compliant helmet.

* When operating an ATV on land open to the public:
– Requires ATV operators age 16 or younger to be accompanied by an adult.
– Prohibits ATV operation between one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise unless headlights are on.
– Prohibits crossing any watercourse on an ATV except at a designated ford, crossing, bridge, or if the watercourse is bisected by a trail.
– Requires ATVs to have an effective muffler system, a USDA Forest Service approved spark arrester, and a brake system all in good operating condition.
– Prohibits ATV operation while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substance.
– Prohibits ATV operation in a reckless manner.

* The new law does not apply to:
– An owner, operator, or renter of a farm or ranch, or that person’s employees, immediate family, or household members, operating an ATV while engaged in farming, wildlife habitat management, or ranching operations;
– A person using an ATV for hunting or trapping purposes if otherwise lawfully engaged in those activities; or
– A minor under age 16, but not younger than age 6 who is operating an ATV under the direct visual supervision of his parent or legal custodian on private property.

Dustin Nelson Wins Round 3 of Yamaha Quad-X Series
Baron and Baard join Nelson on the podium

Yamaha’s Dustin Nelson took his third win of the 2011 Yamaha Quad-X series at Cahuilla Creek MX in Anza, Calif. after battling Beau Baron for the lead in both motos. Nelson’s third victory in as many races makes him the series points leader with a total of 75. Baron claimed second overall with 2-2 moto finishes, placing him nine points behind Nelson in the standings. Dirkie Baard completed the podium with 4-3 moto finishes giving him third place overall.

Baron took the holeshot in the first moto, and held the early lead. Nelson began to set up a pass for the lead halfway through the third lap, and was able to get around Baron just before the whoops section. Nelson held the lead for the remainder of the race, but Baron continued to pressure him all the way to the checkered flag.

Baron also claimed the holeshot of the second moto, as Nelson and his teammate Josh Row fought for second place through the first turn. A small mistake from Baron let Nelson get close enough to attempt a pass for the lead. Baron and Nelson battled through two sets of whoops, and it was Nelson who came out with the lead. Baron held on to second place and sits in second place in the point standings with 66.

Row, Baard and Ethan Thatcher battled throughout the first moto for third, fourth and fifth place. In the second moto, Baard passed Row to take third place in the moto and third place overall with 4-3 moto finishes. Row’s 3-4 moto finishes gave him fourth overall, while Thatcher rounded out the top 5 with fifth place finishes in both motos. Thatcher still sits third in the series points standings with 58.

Wienen Sweeps Motos at Sunset Ridge MX
Can-Am pilot takes over lead in points chase

The chase for the championship tightened up this weekend at round five of the AMA ATV Motocross National Championship Series presented by DWT. Only four points separate the current points leader from second place, the closest margin yet this season. At almost halfway through the season, the veteran riders are beginning to mark their territory while several Rookie riders are showing flashes of brilliance.

Although Motoworks Can-Am’s Wienen lined up at his home track, all holeshot advantages were pushed aside as Sunset Ridge debuted a brand new starting structure this weekend. Makson Construction/JB Racing/Maximum RPM/Hetrick Racing’s Joel Hetrick had no problem adjusting to the changes as he shot out of the hydraulic-powered gates to capture the SSi Decals Holeshot Award. It didn’t take long for Wienen to put the move on Hetrick as the duo went side-by-side over the finish line jump on lap two.

STI Releases New Black Diamond Tire
Cross-terrain six-ply radial tire for utility ATVs and UTVs

STI Tire & Wheel has released its latest ATV/UTV tire – the Black Diamond.

“This super-versatile new ATV/UTV tire is designed to deliver crossover performance—an ideal choice for all terrain types and all seasons—at a value price,” STI says in a release.

According to STI, the Black Diamond’s “V” tread pattern bridges the gap between soft mud/snow/sand and hardpack surface capabilities. Its over-center tread elements are designed to provide a smooth, controlled ride on hardpack, while offering excellent traction and clean-out in soft conditions. The Black Diamond’s 6-ply radial carcass was developed specifically to provide the stability needed for side-by-side UTV applications, while retaining the plush ride characteristics favored by ATV riders. Also, STI says an extended-wear tread compound retains biting edges longer and greatly increases tire life.

Ranger RZRs Finish 1-2 at Bilek Silver State 300
RZR 4 and RZR XP 900 top the podium in Pro UTV class

Polaris Ranger RZRs had another great showing at Best in the Desert’s Bilek Racing Silver State 300 this past weekend, in Henderson, Nev.

Polaris Regional Sales Manager Matt Parks and his Holz Racing Ranger RZR 4 800 were victorious taking the “Pro UTV” class and the Pro Overall. The tight and technical terrain of the course mixed with some really fast areas was different than what Parks is used to racing, but when the dust cleared, he crossed the line first.

Jagged X showed off its new No. 1919 Ranger RZR XP 900 desert racer and took second in the “Pro UTV” class. The car was completed only hours before the race, allowing Jagged X no time for tuning or testing, so the team relied only on past experience and knowledge to get it right the first time. The new No. 1919 worked nearly perfectly for the entire 300 mile race, with only a couple small issues, and fought hard in an epic battle with Parks at the end of the race.

Lasher Motorsports Teryx on Podium at Bilek Silver State 300
Team finished third in Pro UTV class

Lasher Motorsports continued on its quest for a points championship in the Pro UTV class at the Best In The Desert (BITD) racing series this past weekend in Henderson, Nev.

Coming off a second place finish at the Parker 250 back in January, Lasher Motorsports had adequate time to prepare for the second race of the season, the Bilek Silver State 300. Mike Lasher and his Monster Energy Kawasaki / Lasher Motorsports Team overhauled their Kawasaki Teryx in preparation for the remainder of this long and grueling desert racing series. Many test sessions were conducted on the # 1924 Teryx to ensure the Pro UTV was at its best.

During the break between the first and second races Lasher Motorsports and its engine sponsor Muzzys Performance hooked up to strengthen the UTV’s power plant. A powerful Muzzys 916cc Kawasaki V-Twin was installed and its benefits were quickly noticed during the ensuing test sessions. With the Walker EvansRacing 2.5″ shocks on Xtreme Machine & Fab suspension tuned and ready this Teryx and its team were prepared for the Nevada Desert. The team also installed Billet King’s rear brake kit allowing them to have the confidence of being able to stop the Teryx in the corners and out brake the competition.

Loretta Lynn's GNCC postponed due to rain

SuperTrapp Celebrates 40th Anniversary
Legendary exhaust manufacturer still going strong

SuperTrapp Industries is celebrating 40 years of being a leading manufacturer of comprehensive performance exhaust systems for a variety of motor vehicle applications, including motorcycles, ATV and automotive.

The history of the SuperTrapp muffler dates back to 1971 in the Davis, Calif. garage of inventor, Paul Moller. In the late 60’s, Moller was immersed in experimental trial of the XM-3, his early attempt at a flying automobile. In desperate need of funds, Moller began looking for an intermediate, far easier target for his newly developed tunable disc technology. Eventually Moller turned to a passion of his – motorcycles. And, the SuperTrapp muffler was born, soon becoming one of the most popular aftermarket accessories ever made for motorcycles.

A signature feature of SuperTrapp exhaust systems is the patented Tunable Disc Technology which was originally created for the XDUSOR, the first motorcycle exhaust product sold by Moller in 1971. This technology allows the rider to adapt their bike, ATV or automotive to a specific riding environment. This is accomplished through a series of discs with a precisely aligned diameter that form the exhaust outlet. By adding or subtracting discs, the rider can tune the power band and sound of their machine in just a few minutes with basic hand tools.

Yokley Racing ATV and UTV Report: WORCS Round 4
Polaris RZR XP 900s sweep UTV podium

National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley finished second in the Side-by-Side 1 Class in Round 4 of the 2011 WORCS Series. National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished fifth in the Pro ATV Class.

Summary – Side by Side Race

The National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing team arrived in California two days before this WORCS race to do some testing and get used to the terrain. Team Side-by-Side driver Scott Kiger unfortunately was not able to make the trip. He underwent an emergency appendectomy on Thursday, and is recovering back in West Virginia. The team did the finishing touches on the machines and headed to Cahuilla Creek MX Park in Anza. The course was very fast with a few technical sections including a Pro section featuring huge rocks that had to be ridden over. A pro-style motocross course was also utilized.

William Yokley got a fifth place start in the 45 minute Side-by-Side Class 1 race. There were 15 in the class, and he passed 2 competitors in the motocross section on the opening lap. He caught up to leader Beau Baron and settled into a good pace. The track crew heavily watered sections of the course, so if you followed too closely, the mud roost was pretty heavy.

Polaris to Keep Some Engine Manufacturing in Wisconsin
About 50 jobs to remain at Osceola facility

Polaris Industries Inc. has decided to keep some of its engine manufacturing operations in Osceola, Wis. This announcement comes in response to stronger than projected growth for Polaris in recent months. Polaris announced last may that it was shutting down the facility.

“Since we announced the strategic realignment last year, our volumes are up significantly in each of our businesses and our U.S. plants are full from a physical footprint standpoint,” says Scott Wine, CEO, Polaris Industries Inc. “While we have outperformed our original volume projections, the Osceola team has executed flawlessly and continues to produce world-class, quality products. In order to meet escalating demand while maintaining our focus on quality, keeping some engine capability and output in Osceola was an obvious choice.”

According to Polaris, keeping these manufacturing operations in Osceola allows the company dual-plant production capability for Off-Road Vehicle engines and provides production continuity for motorcycle and snowmobile engines. Polaris says it will utilize the capabilities and current infrastructure in Osceola to maintain continuity for the foreseeable future.

Polaris worked closely with the state of Wisconsin and the Department of Commerce to keep some engine manufacturing in Osceola and preserve approximately 50 assembly jobs at the facility. Polaris’ current global employment base is approximately 3,300 people.

Natalie on Top Again at Budds Creek MX
Can-Am rider takes over points lead

It wouldn’t be springtime in Maryland without a good old-fashioned mud race. Mother Nature did not disappoint this weekend at the Motoworks Budds Creek National, round four of the AMA ATV Motocross Championship Series Presented by DWT. John Natalie prevailed through the muddy conditions as he swept both motos and took over the points lead from Motoworks Can-Am teammate Chad Wienen.

“I usually do pretty well in the mud. Being from Pennsylvania it’s basically all we’re used to riding in so I was really happy with it today,” says Natalie.

Natalie grabbed the $125 SSi Decals Holeshot Award in both motos, banking a total of $250 for his impressive starts. Good holeshots weren’t the only thing Natalie was winning, though. The Can-Am rider used his starts as leverage to separate from the pack early on, which is especially important in muddy conditions.

Yokley Racing ATV and UTV Report: Big Buck GNCC
Yokley, Kiger finish 1-2 in UTV race

National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley finished first Overall and first in the Side by Side Open Modified Class at the Pirelli Big Buck GNCC, while National Guard Polaris Coastal Yokley Racing Team driver Scott Kiger finished second overall. Meanwhile, National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished 43rd Overall and 11th XC1 Pro today in Round 4 of the 2011 GNCC Series after experiencing mechanical issues.

Yokley Racing Summary

The Big Buck is a popular stop on the GNCC schedule every year, and great weather greeted the racers with sunshine and temps in the 80s. The Polaris Yokley Side by Side Team has continued to refine the new RZR XP-900 for GNCC racing. The team runs many stock parts including the motor in this top-level cross country race series.

William Yokley started on row 1 because he is the series points leader, and Scott Kiger started in row 4. When the starter’s flag dropped, William battled with Daryl Rath for the first few turns, and then slipped ahead as they headed into the woods. He had clear sailing for the first couple of laps until he ran into lappers. The RZR was handling and working very well, and he was able to extend his lead to more than four minutes at the finish. The track was fast with a few dusty areas.

Scott Kiger, on the other hand, had his work cut out for him, starting behind so many other machines. He tried to be patient, but had to be aggressive at the same time. He moved up to fifth after lap 1, then fourth on lap 2, and then was second on lap 3 until the finish. He noticed his front bumper flapping up and down in front of him on the last lap. When he finished and examined it, the mounts were broken off and the winch cable was the only thing holding it on. So much for being patient! Yokley still leads the GNCC season points, while Kiger has moved up, tied for second.

As for the ATV race, Jarrod McClure has been having good finishes so far this GNCC season, and he was hoping to continue that at the Big Buck in South Carolina. The track had the usual tight woods and mudholes, but there were also many wide-open fast sections.

McClure has been on a roll lately, getting holeshots in the past several races. This was no different, as he once again got the lead at the start. Adam McGill assumed the lead as they headed into the woods. About two miles into the race, McGill went in a mudhole, and got momentarily stuck. McClure was committed in the same ruts and had to stop in the deepest part of the bog. McGill was able to get free quickly, but McClure was stuck pretty badly. When he finally got free, all the XC1 Pro riders had passed him.

He put the hammer down and passed several riders, finishing lap 1 in ninth. On lap 2, he caught some more riders and was in seventh. Misfortune struck on lap 3, when he clipped a tree and badly bent his tie rod, making it almost impossible to steer. He limped down an access road back to the pits, and the crew went to work to try to fix it. They removed the bent piece and straightened it the best they could.

With the repairs completed, he took off and re-entered the course where he exited it earlier. At this point, he was almost 1 lap down in 90th overall. He worked his way back to 43rd overall in the last two laps. One little miscalculation pretty much ruined his day. Fortunately, he did not injure himself! He remains in fifth place in season GNCC points.

McClure, as well as Yokley and Kiger, will now get ready for the long trip to the west coast for the next WORCS race in Anza, Calif. on April 23. Before that, the team hauler will provide a display area for the National Guard at the annual Thunder over Louisville, Ky. festivities. The 90-foot hauler makes for a large area to showcase the RZR XP-900 race machines as well as other Polaris ATVs. The display will compliment the other military equipment and helicopters for this one day aircraft and fireworks show. Last year, more than 700,000 people attended this event.

FRE/KTM rider, Bryan Cook, earned an impressive fifth place result at the fourth round of the GNCC Series held in Union, SC.

Matlock Racing Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 Report
Team finishes race despite technical difficulties

The Matlock Racing Pro ATV Team of Wayne Matlock, Wes Miller & Josh Caster crossed the finish line after multiple mechanical problems at the 2011 Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 on March 12th in San Felipe, Baja, Mexico.

The #1A Matlock Racing team prides themselves on being well prepared when it comes to racing in Baja. The 2011 SCORE San Felipe 250 was no different as the team headed south of the border to begin its pre-running. This course is known for endless miles of sandy whoops and after a week of pre-running all the riders agreed this course was going to be the roughest San Felipe yet.

During pre-running on the Thursday before the race, Caster had a high speed crash due to a broken shock bolt while riding one of his sections. Luckily he walked away with only minor scratches and was able to finish his pre-run later that day. The rest of the team had no issues while pre-running even with the extremely rough course. As the week leading up to the race wore on the course continued to get rougher and the holes got bigger. On Friday before technical inspection the team spent a little extra time testing the race quad at race mile 7 near Zoo Road. This section of the course is known for its giant rock strewn whoops. A few last adjustments and the riders agreed this may be the fastest and best working quad they had ever ridden.

The temperatures were beyond perfect at Millcreek MX Park in sunny Pell City, Ala. this weekend. With a full gate of AMA Pro riders and a well-groomed track, it couldn’t have been a better day for racing.

Motoworks DWT Fox Shox Holz Racing Can-Am rider Chad Wienen ran the fastest lap time of the morning. Coming off the previous two seasons as just a top three contender, Wienen has come into 2011 fully prepared and ready to take home a championship. So far, the Illinois native has swept every moto, giving him the points lead heading into round three in a couple weeks.

Yokley Racing ATV and UTV Report: Maxxis General GNCC
Yokley wins UTV race, McClure fifth in XC1

National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Racing Team driver William Yokley finished 1st Overall and 1st in the Side by Side Open Modified Class, and National Guard Polaris Coastal Yokley Racing Team driver Scott Kiger finished 12th in the same class after experiencing mechanical problems. Meanwhile, National Guard Coastal Yokley Racing ATV Team rider Jarrod McClure finished fifth overall and fifth in the XC1 Pro Division.

Yokley Racing Summary

The National Guard Polaris Coastal DragonFire Yokley Side by Side Team traveled to Georgia anxious to see how the new Polaris RZR XP900 would perform in GNCC style racing. They had a couple of WORCS races under their belts, but the eastern woods courses are much tighter and more technical. The GNCCs have more varied terrain with creeks, mud holes, steep hills, deep ruts and lots of tree roots. The machines run a narrower width in these conditions, than in the wide open WORCS desert races out west.

Team drivers William Yokley, with guest passenger Miles Hallock, and Scott Kiger, with his mechanic, Joe Waligora, both started on the front row. When the flag dropped, Scott settled into fourth and William right behind in fifth. The game plan was to see how the RZRs worked in these conditions, and get a good feel, then try to pick up the pace as the race progressed. Neither driver had much practice time with the GNCC setup, so they were being cautious early on. Yokley moved up to third on lap 3 with Kiger right behind. On lap 4, William took over second, but Scott caught a tree root in one of the deep ruts, and damaged the A-Arm, causing the right front wheel to be kicked way out of alignment, making steering in these conditions almost impossible.

Kiger dropped back to 14th, and tried to limp around to finish the event. He eventually finished in 12th position, which is as good as can be expected under the circumstances. There were many other competitors taken out by the ruts, rocks and roots today. On lap 5, William took over the lead, and felt comfortable while picking up his race pace. Yokley brought it home for the overall win with almost four minutes over second place after the 8 lap, one-hour race.

The team was very pleased with the performance of the new XP900s, and learned some things which will make them even more competitive. Yokley is presently leading the points in both the WORCS and GNCC series. Scott Kiger will compete in the next WORCS race in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. on March 19, and both he and William will be back for the next GNCC Side by Side race in Union, South Carolina on April 9.

Jarrod McClure made it through Round 1 in Florida just six days ago, and was ready for Round 2 in Georgia. He has had a very busy season so far, competing in both the WORCS and GNCC Series. This track consists of red Georgia clay with lots of deep ruts and tight, technical trails. Being consistent and staying out of trouble is important to finish well here.

Jarrod got a great start and was fifth going into the woods. He found a good line early and got up to third, and was able to hold that position until near the end of lap 1. Borich passed him just before the scoring tent to put him back to fourth place. Jarrod was stoked to be running with the top guys, but was already experiencing some arm pump, and he knew he needed to relax a bit and maintain a good, steady pace.

He was running in sixth place going into the last lap, and was feeling good. He passed up to fifth place, and had a great battle with Kiser the entire lap. He finished the race in fifth position, and was very happy with the result. This course gets very rough with lots of sharp edged bumps and exposed tree roots in the deep ruts, so to finish in the top five is a great achievement.

The National Guard Coastal Yokley ATV ran strong the entire race. Jarrod sits in fifth place in the season GNCC points after two rounds. He now travels out west for next weekend’s WORCS race in Lake Havasu, and then back east for the next GNCC in Morganton, NC on March 26. This is a tough schedule, but he is doing very well in both series so far. See you at the races!

FRE/KTM GNCC Race Report: Round 2
Cook earns holeshot on way to eighth place finish

FRE/KTM rider Bryan Cook earned another holeshot award at the second round of the GNCC Series in Aonia Pass, Ga.

Cook and his KTM ride shot off the line to nail the holeshot as the riders rounded the first corner of the XC1 class. Cook was followed closely by Chris Bithell, Brian Wolf, Chris Borich and Jarrod McClure. On the first lap the lead group swapped positions multiple times with Bithell eventually crossing the first lap mark in the lead. Soon after, a stick derailed Cook’s chain and his hopes for a strong finish. He was able to get moving again but lost significant time and positions.

At the end of the race, Cook was able to move into eighth place where he finished for the day. After two rounds, Cook now sits sixth in overall point standings.

“I am happy with my ride today. It is unfortunate that we lost the chain, but I am satisfied with my overall performance and my KTM was running great,” says Cook. We got the holeshot and put ourselves in good contention for a top spot before we had some bad luck.”

Jeremie Warnia Off to Solid Start in WORCS
Can-Am pilot also won Le Touquet Quadro Beach race

Holz Racing/Motoworks/ Can-Am sponsored Jeremie Warnia has gotten off to a very strong start in the 2011 racing season.

Warnia won ATV Pro Class at the first round of the World Off-Road Championship Series in Taft, Calif. Riding on Holz Racing Products suspension and steering components, Warnia clocked the best qualifying time by 11 seconds and placed first in the WORCS Pro main event.

Warnia then crossed the Atlantic and raced to first place at the legendary Le Touquet Quadro Beach Race at Le Touquet Paris Plage, France. This was Warnia’s second consecutive win at the Quadro. It took him two hours to gain a one-minute lead over the second-place rider at the Quadro, but he stretched that lead to more than five minutes at the finish line, after more than three hours of racing.
