Youth ATVs
Youth ATVs are how the next generation of riders are created. Sure, they might look small and under powered to us, but think back to when you were maybe 10 years old and how unbelievably excited you’d be if somebody gave you a Youth ATV of your very own!
Most ATV manufacturers know the importance of enticing young riders into our sport and have a machine ready to keep them grinning from ear to ear. Smart manufacturers do their best to make them look as much like adult-sized machines as they can – with the same styling and graphics as the ATVs their parents ride.
Let’s take a look at all of the Youth ATV models that are available from the major manufacturers today.
When it comes to supplying young riders with machines built just for them, nobody has more options than Polaris. Brand new for 2020 is the Polaris Outlaw 70 EFI ($2299), which is designed for riders 6 years and older and features electronic fuel injection, single-lever disc brakes, steel front bumper, and LED headlights. The Polaris Outlaw 110 EFI ($3399) is a sporty Youth ATV built for riders 10 years and older and features a 112cc fuel-injected engine. The Polaris Sportsman 110 EFI ($3399) shares the same 112cc engine, but is built to look like a full-size Sportsman ATV complete with front and rear racks. Finally, the Polaris Phoenix 200 ($4199) is a sporty machine designed for riders 14 years and older and relies on a 196cc carbureted engine. All Polaris Youth ATVs feature a parent-adjustable speed limiter, youth ATV helmet, and training DVD.
Polaris is the only manufacturer to offer youth models with a roll over protective structure (ROPS) and it actually has a few options available. While not exactly a UTV, the Polaris ACE 150 EFI ($3999) is a single-seat machine with a cage and is designed for riders 10 years and older. It features a 149cc engine, tilt steering, seat belt, safety nets, and 9 inches of ground clearance. The Polaris Ranger 150 EFI ($5499) is a utility-focussed Youth UTV and has the same safety features as the ACE, along with digital speed limiting and geofencing that allows parents to control where the machine goes and how fast it can move all from their smartphone. The Polaris RZR might be the off-road vehicle that kids love the most and the Polaris RZR 170 EFI ($5299) is meant just for them. Designed for drivers 10 years and older, this machine offers parent-adjustable speed limiting, an adjustable seat, and much more. All Polaris Youth UTVs come with two youth ATV helmets and a training DVD.
Can-Am offers four ATVs for young riders – all in the sport DS family. The Can-Am DS 70 ($2349) is intended for riders 6 years and older and features a 70cc engine, 6.3 inches of rear suspension travel and a throttle limiter. The Can-Am DS 90 ($2849) is for riders 10 years and older and features an 89.5cc engine and the same safety features and suspension of its little brother. The Can-Am DS 90X ($3749) is a more race-focussed model and builds on the DS 90 platform with HPG piggyback shocks, 9 inches of rear suspension travel, 7 inches of front suspension travel, kick-up foot pegs, front bumper and Nerf bars. The Can-Am DS 250 ($4199) is for riders 14 years and older and features a 249.4cc engine, larger chassis and 6.7 inches of rear suspension travel.
Yamaha is also no slouch when it comes to providing ATVs for young riders. For 2020 there are three Yamaha Youth ATV models available. The Yamaha Raptor 50 ($2199) is the smallest of the bunch and is designed for riders 6 years and older. Features include a 49cc air-cooled engine, CVT transmission, two-stage rpm limiter and throttle limiter. One step up is the Yamaha Raptor 90 ($2999), which is suited to riders 10 and older and looks a whole lot like a full-size Raptor 700. It features a more powerful 90cc engine, preload adjustable shocks and 5.7 inches of rear suspension travel. The final youth option is the Yamaha Grizzly 90 ($3099), which is designed for riders 10 years and older and looks much like mom and dad’s full-size Grizzly ATV. Features include a 90cc engine, front and rear cargo racks and parent controls like rpm and throttle limiters.
Kawasaki produces two kids ATVs. The Kawasaki KFX 50 ($1999) designed for riders 6 years and older and is among the most affordable machines on the market. This is a Utility ATV modeled after the full-size Alterra and features a 90cc engine, adjustable throttle, speed-limiting governor, fully independent front suspension, preload adjustable shocks, front and rear cargo racks and safety flag.
Kymco is a smaller ATV manufacturer in North America, but it offers one of the deepest Youth ATV lineups in the industry. Starting on the sporty side, the Kymco Mongoose 70S ($2199) is made for riders 6 years and older and features a 69cc engine, CVT transmission, adjustable shocks, rear disc brakes, front bumper and rear grab bar.
